生徒から以下の質問を受けました。
適語を選べという文法の問題集です。
Your answer is far from ( ).
1. satisfaction 2. satisfactory 3. satisfied
正解は２番ですが、生徒から１番ではなぜだめなのですかと質問を受けました。
辞書を確認しますと、far fromは、「名詞・動名詞・形容詞がくる」となっています。
私どものnative speakerに提示してみても、satisfactionとは言わないと言います。
そこで、以下のような英文をnative speakerに提示したところ、受け入れられるとの答えでした。
Just to reduce the price is far from satisfaction.
さらに、インターネットから"far from + 名詞"の英文をnative speakerに見せました。
1. It is not surprising that this undertaking is still far from completion, as is shown by the Secretary-General's report.
2. But the database is still far from reality.

上記の英文に対しては、問題ないとの答えでした。
far fromの後にはどのような名詞を置くことができますか。
ご教授いただければ幸いです。
A) 結論から言うと、私にはわかりませんでした。手元の資料を調べても解説はありませんでした。そこで、例文から考えてみました。
まず、手元の辞書からfar from＋名詞の例文を拾いました。
(a)Remember life is far from a bed of roses.（ジーニアス英和辞典第5版）
(b)an ideal (that is) far from reality（ジーニアス和英辞典）
(c) His remark is far from the truth. （ジーニアス和英辞典）
(d) It is far from (being) the case.（ウイズダム英和辞典）
(e) She is far from (being) a good singer. （ウイズダム和英辞典）
(f) His work is far from perfection. （ウイズダム和英辞典）
(g) The result was far from my expectation.（OLEX和英辞典）

上記の例文を見ていて、2種類に分かれると気づきました。
たとえば次の2文です。

(e)はfar from (being)を消去しても、文が成立します。つまり、She is a good singer.と言うことができます。しかし、(f)はfar fromを消去すると、（×）His work is perfection.とは言うことはできません。このことは衣笠方式「Google検索による英語語法学習・研究法」（開拓社）のやり方で確かめられます。
His work is perfection.をsite:eduで検索すると、ヒットしたのは1件でした。His work is perfect.が28,900件ヒットし、これが正しいです。そこで、前者を(A)型、後者を(B)型として上記の例文を分析しました。

3．概念の範疇化
3.1 概念の範疇化とその例
語の連鎖[A][B][C]...「...」が概念としてのまとまり[ABC...]と解釈され、それがひとつのまとまった統語単位として解釈されることを「概念の範疇化」（Concept Categoriation）という。Kajitaはこのような現象を、再分析（Reanalysis）という統語的な説明方法によって、孤立化した（ここでいう周辺的な）現象の説明を行ってきた。
(67) a. John is far from the destination.
b. John is far from being honest.
c. John is far from honest.
far fromの本来の「距離が離れている」の意味から、抽象的な「ほど遠い」の意味に使われ、それがさらに(67b)(67c)のような使い方がされるのは、[far [from the station]]という構成であったものが[[far from] [honest]というような再分析によってfar fromがひとつの副詞として解釈された結果である。
これを援用すると、（A）型はShe is a good singer.という文にfar fromという副詞が介在し、She is [far from] a good singer.となったと考えられる。
一方(B)型は、元来の be far from A「Aからほど遠い」という原義が生きている。His work is far [from perfection].
この(B)型が存在する証拠に、far fromを比較級で使った(m)(p)(q)(r)(s)がある。特に(q)(r)を見てみよう。

さて、ここで当初の問題にもどりましょう。「far fromの後にどんな名詞が置けるか」です。
・まず、far fromを入れずに文が成立すればＯＫで、(A)型に分類される。

次に(B)型について考えました。

この文はHis work is perfection.とは言えない。そしてfar [from A]「Aから遠い」の意味が生きているのである。それならば反対のnear (to) Aが言えるのではないか。調べてみると、実証できた。

near (to) ...が見つからないのが3例だが、(u)については、Nothing is[can be] farther[further] from one's mind[thoughts] (than...) 「（...などは）毛頭考えていない、考えつかない」のイディオムがあるので、使える。(g) については、同じイディオムがmindがexpectationに変わったと考えれば使える。(k)については衣笠方式で、"far from the political and economic health"を調べて見るとヒットしたのは0件だったので無視してよいと思う。
これで全体像がつかめました。整理します。
「far fromの後にどんな名詞が置けるか」
(1)．far fromを入れずに文が成立すればOKで、(A)型に分類される。
(2)．far fromを入れずに文が成立しない場合も、 near (to)を入れて文が成立すればOKで、（B）型に分類される。
(3)．far fromを入れずに文が成立しない場合も慣用表現から生まれた、one's mind[intention/ thought/ expectation]はOK。
それでは最初の問題集の問題に戻ります。

まず、intended answerは2. satisfactoryです。
これはYour answer is satisfactory.を否定文にしたものです。Your answer is far from satisfactory.は成立します。
それでは、1. satisfactionはどうでしょうか？
is satisfactionは成立します。よって、is far from satisfactionも成立します。ただし、頻度は大きく異なります。衣笠方式で調べてみました。
・far from satisfactoryは site:eduで23400件ヒットしました。
far from satisfactionはsite:eduで1590件ヒットしました。14.7倍です。ですからふつうのnative speakerはfar from satisfactoryを使うでしょう。
さらに主語の問題があります。主語をanswerにして調べてみました。
・answer is far from satisfactoryはsite:eduで9件ヒットしました。
answer is far from satisfactionはsite:eduで0件でした。
どうやら主語がanswerなので、1. satisfactionは理論的に可能でも、実際には使われないようです。しかし、このことを入試問題で出すことは無理があります。
なお、この種の問題は私なら次のように授業します。
He is ( ).
1. ill 2. illness
「補語は原則として名詞より形容詞を優先する。形容詞がない場合に、名詞を使う。」よって、「彼は病気である」は、He is ill.と言い、He is illness.とは言わない。同様に、Your answer is satisfactory.と形容詞が使えるのだから、本問はそれを否定文にしてYour answer is far from satisfactory.となる。
つぎに、質問者の引用されたインターネットから採った"far from + 名詞"の英文についてです。

1．2．はすでに辞書にありますね。3はbe far from...ではなく、副詞のfarを使ったfar from...「…から離れて」の用法です。4は調べたらいつも否定文で使われるis never far from controversy「いつも口論になる」という慣用表現のようです。
