Q165) 今回は高校２年生用の教科書 LANDMARK II の Lesson 7 からの質問です。
硫黄島での戦闘について書かれた英文です。
・PART 2 の第１段落です。
Iwoto was very significant for both the US and Japan in the war. For the US, it was an important stopping point to carry out big attacks on Japanese cities. For Japan, on the other hand, losing Iwoto meant losing the base that protected the mainland. It would lead to the exposure of unarmed citizens to fire and gunshot.
この最後の文にwouldが使われていますが，これはどういう意味でしょうか。[可能性・推量」としてしまうと，現在に対するものになり，文脈と合わなくなります。
しかし，「～しただろう」などとするのは〈助動詞＋have＋過去分詞〉でないといけませんし，時制の一致と言われてもうまく日本語になりません。
どのように説明および，日本語にするべきでしょうか。

The person who led the Japanese side in the battle was Kuribayashi, the writer of the letters shown at the beginning. He understood his mission clearly and was prepared to die on Iwoto with his soldiers. It was all in the hope that their fighting would delay the deaths of unarmed people on the mainland, including their own families.
この最後の文 It was ～ の It が何を指しているのかよくわかりません。
これは前の文の後半にある「兵士とともに死ぬ覚悟ができていたということ」を指すのかと思ったのですが，いまひとつ確たるものが得られません。

A) まず、前者のPART 2 の第１段落の問題です。このwouldは「過去から見た未来」の用法です。ジーニアス英和辞典第五版のwouldの４「直説法過去」の「解説」にこうあります。
(1)[過去から見た未来] 物語では過去から見た未来を表すことがある。
The climbers had reached 3,000 meters. Soon they would see the summit.登山者たちは3000メートルまで登っていた。もうすぐ頂上が見えてくるだろう。
この「過去から見た未来」の用法はふつう「…することになるのだった」と訳します。また、Itは直前の文のlosing the base that protected the mainlandを受けます。よって、It would lead to the exposure of unarmed citizens to fire and gunshot.は、「本土を守っている拠点を失えば、非武装の市民たちが火と銃弾にさらされることになるのだった」
次に後者のPART 3 の第１段落の問題です。in the hope that節は本来は「…することを期待して」という意味の副詞句です。本問ではこれが補語で使われています。その直前のallは代名詞で主語と同格です。この用法は、ジーニアス英和辞典第五版の代名詞のallの３にあります。

主語のItは、あなたがおっしゃる通り、前文のwas prepared to die on Iwoto with his soldiersの部分を指します。前文全体ではありません。ジーニアス英和辞典第五版のitの２a「先行する文の一部や節の意味内容（一部）を受けて」の解説にこうあります。
(2)直前の文そのものを主語の位置で受けることは通例不可。
Bill doesn't want to go and that's[this is, ×it is] the problem.ビルは行きたくないといっていて、それが問題だ。
よって、It was all in the hope that their fighting would delay the deaths of unarmed people on the mainland, including their own families.は、「兵士たちと共に硫黄島で死ぬ覚悟ができていることはすべて自分たちの戦闘が家族を含む本土の非武装の人々の死を遅らせることを期待してのものだった」となります。
