Parabens is a safe and effective preservative, which widely used in food, cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals industry. Parabens is colorless crystals or crystalline powder with slight astringent taste. It is slight soluble in water and easily soluble in alcohol. When compared with other traditional preservatives such as benzoic acid and sorbic acid. The preservative effects of Parabens will not change with the PH value. At the same time, the Parabens also has the features of low-harm, high-efficiency and bacteriostat, and it is one of the most important preservatives in China.

Most of the countries allow the Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, PropylParaben and Butyl Paraben as the food preservatives.America usually use the Ethylparaben and Isopropyl Paraben,while Japan usually use the Butyl Paraben. But in practical use, we usually mix the use of different Parabens to achieve a better preservative performance. Parabens can also be used with benzoic acid and other traditional food preservatives. As the parabens have low solubility in water, it is firstly been dissolved in sodium hydrate solution (NaOH), acetic acid or alcohol. Parabens dissolves in sodium hydrate to form sodium paraben. In March, 2002, China approve the Sodium Methyl Paraben, Sodium Ethyl P-hydroxybenzoate, Sodium Propyl Paraben and Sodium Butylparaben as the food preservatives, which marks that China foodsadditives have been on international convention.


The working mechanism of Parabens is similar with phenol. It can ruin the cell membrane of microorganism to change the property of protein in the cell. And finally restrain the cell activity. The bacteriostatic activity of Parabens is mainly depends on the working on Molecular state.
