It’s been two days since the Versailles live but I only managed to pull myself together by today, in order to write something. It’s a little difficult to put down everything but I’ll try my best.
My friend, Risa came over on Saturday evening. We watched the football/soccer game (Germany!), got a bit drunk, and couldn’t sleep until 3 am. Which wasn’t funny because we wanted to go out to the club early. So I got up at 5:30, Risa at 6. At around 7 we gathered all our gear (food, drinks in a cooler bag, blanket) and off we went. We met another friend, Sayu on the way. To our surprise, by the time we got to the club there were already quite a few people camping there. As we later learned, they came the previous night. But we were still among the early birds. Soon enough, Sayaka, Shizu, and Hikaru have joined us. The six of us spent the whole day laying/sitting on my blanket in the shades of the nearby trees. We were the loudest and most frightening group. We criticized everyone: for their looks, for their behavior, but most of all for their idiocy. I mean, what could you say to this: we were listening to Versailles from Hikaru’s cell phone and the people around us didn’t even recognize the music. They were listening to KPop and Girugamesh. Seriously, WTF?! Then why did you come to a Versailles show? I swear, I’ll never understand these so-called “fans” who only attend shows because the band playing is Japanese and they’re so “kawaii” u______u
Anyway, we survived, even with this melting heat. We went to public bathroom at the nearby bus station, where each time I poured water all over my tank top at the front (it was black with white skulls so nobody noticed anything). At around 5 pm people got up to form two lines! which caused major commotion and fights. I won’t write about this in length, let it be enough that it’s not worth going to the venue so early, or even a day ahead when people who arrive half an hour before the opening of the gates simply walk to the head of the line and decide to stand there. With Despa this September (given that it’s a Wednesday), I’m going to do the same. Some of my friends said they’ll take off a day from school to camp out, so I’ll just join them. Everybody else is doing this, so can I.
Regardless, when inside, we managed to catch the left side of the second row anyway, and according to plan I was right in front of Teru (he’s my favorite band member). From there I could see everything that happened on stage. And of course the other members, even Kamijo, came over to our side, so I haven’t missed out on anything. Also luckily, behind us there were some Austrian fans and they didn’t push or fight at all, so I could stand and headbang away, without having to fight for my life :D We were close to the security so we always got enough water, whereas people kept fainting in the middle. Of course, it’s necessary to stand in front of Kamijo….Strangely, it reminded me of how at a Dir en grey live most people want the middle first section because they want to be close to Kyo. It was just the same thing all over xD
I was a bit afraid that my left ear’s gonna get damaged because I was right next to the speakers, but again this proved to be the best place in the whole venue. First of all: at the very back almost no one could hear anything from all the stupid, underage fanbitches screaming in a shrill voice. I mean, what is it with 12-14 year olds screaming like getting raped in the ass for over two hours? I mean, I have nothing against screaming or shouting members’ names, but at a reasonable level you know. For many people the whole show was ruined by the terrible screaming… And they didn’t pay good money to listen to their fellow fans. Nevertheless, this screaming only bothered me until the band entered the stage and they started to play because, as I said, I was right next to the speaker *evil smirk*
I should write something about the show but I’m still at a major loss of words. Even after two days I’m under the show’s influence. And this only happened with Dir en grey before, so these guys in Versailles do know something. They were superb, magical, majestic, glorious, awesome, unforgettable. Even if the mic wasn’t perfect, even if Kamijo’s voice almost totally left him by the end….they enjoyed themselves just as much as we enjoyed the show they put on stage. They played all my favorites: “The Umbrella of Glass”, “Prince”, “Amorphous”, “God Palace”, “Princess”, but the absolute highlight was when the members all left the stage except for Teru, who walked to the middle and played “Reminiscence.” That was the crown on the whole evening. Absolutely breathtaking. Of course I promised myself not to cry because of Jasmine You….and of course it turned out the other way. I started crying at the end of “Amorphous” because of the lyrics and cried all the way as they played “Serenade.” But Teru and Kamijo also cried so I think it was alright this way. It’s been almost a year since he died, and yet I still cried like that. Only time something like this happened was at my first Dir en grey live, but there for a completely different reason. Call me whatever you like, I just tend to get so emotional sometimes.
I don’t have the full setlist, all I know is that they played “Sound in Gate” as the intro. After that there was “Asceanded Master”, “Zombie”, “Prince”, “The Umbrella of Glass”, “Amorphous”, “Serenade” (these two were after each other), Teru played “Reminiscence”, “Aristocrat’s Symphony”, “Shout & Bites”, “Princess”, and the encore was “The Red Carpet Day” and “The Revenant Choir.” I saw the photo of the setlist, the Hungarian promoter is my friend and he showed us after the show, but I can’t remember, sorry x’D But what I can remember is that all the band members had such a great time on stage. Unfortunately I couldn’t manage to catch anything, just the hand of Hizaki when he came over to our side to stand on the speaker, or rather, he grabbed my right wrist XD And his hand wasn’t sweaty at all.
After the show I stayed with my friends who convinced me to go to the meet&greet where we could shake hands with the band. Strangely, I wasn’t feeling nervous at all. There sat Hizaki, Yuki, Kamijo, and Teru, and I shook their hands and told them in Japanese that I’m happy to see them, and they all thanked me, Kamijo even in Hungarian, and Yuki’s hand was so warm, and him and Teru held onto my hand a bit longer. Maybe they recognized me from Ameba, where I read their blogs regularly or I don’t know, but that smile Teru beamed at me was unforgettable. That guy is amazing as a guitarist, has an energetic stage presence which I can only compare to Toshiya, and he’s really all smiles and fun, and enjoys what he’s doing, with such mastery on the guitar that - to me at least - easily surpasses Hizaki. He’s a bit like Toshiya, and a bit like Die, and yet he’s neither.
Only thing I missed was how the new bassist, Masashi was blending in the backdrop a little. He was the quiet one, almost as if he wasn’t there. But Teru tried to gain him some attention and we, on the left side, kept cheering for him. There was one point he came forward, dressed in elegant black, and he’s perfect, fits into the band image so well. Like a silent knight, literally. And he plays very skillfully, having mastered all the songs. They really should make him a full member. I know that these things take their due course in time, but I hope to see him play with them as the new bassist from now on. He’s not trying to be a “second Jasmine You” or anything like that, but he fits the band image. When they played together with Teru, their backs against each other, I felt like “yes, this is their new bassist”, and not just someone whom they hired to play with them on this world tour. Those of you who have seen them somewhere on this tour would know what I mean.
What can I say to close this review off with? That my knees, my back, my arms, my shoulders, and my neck are still sore, after two days? That I want to go back, want to see them again? That it was worth camping out there in this horrible heat? That I can’t get out of the “concert feeling”? Because these all apply. It was a wonderful evening, one which I’ll never forget. If you get the chance to see them, please do so. You won’t regret it, trust me. It felt like I was in the court of Louis XIV. or Maria Theresa. Thank you for the band for this wonderful performance! Next time they come, I’ll sure be there (and according to their blogs they really enjoyed Hungary, and this show was the best in Europe!)
