No Prayers Go Unanswered
- From SGI President Ikeda´s question-and-answer session at the Bharat (India) Soka Gakkai Centre in New Delhi, February 16, 1992
Question: I have partially lost sight in my right eyes. Is there any special type of prayer that I should offer in order to regain my sight?
SGI President Ikeda: There is no such thing as a special kind of prayer. You should pray with earnest determination, so that you will be able to regain your sight, apply yourself to your work to your heat´s content, and more fully dedicate your life to kosen-rufu.
As far as physiological factors are concerned, there are various possibilities as to what will be the final outcome concerning the restoration of your vision. However, what I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt is that, through your practice, you will definitely be able to open your mind´s eyes. The mind´s eyes will come to shine with a brilliance that will enable you to immediately grasp the essential nature of things at a glance.
(Second Soka Gakkai) President Toda himself had extremely poor eyesight, yet nothing escaped his sharp eyes. In the Gosho, there is a passage which likens the eyes to the sun and the moon. ("The eyes correspond to the sun and moon.") (*1)
Although the sun and moon disappear from sight when the sky is overcast, high above the clouds they continue to shine. This describe the state of life enjoyed by one who has opened the mind´s eye. Such is "the wonderful workings of one mind." (*2)
On a fundamental level, all of one´s prayer will be answered; hence the word "wonderful," which means beyond ordinary understanding.
