A Story About the Shinto Lantern in Tatsumi Shrine and its Donor

大國魂神社の末社のひとつである巽神社には弁才天さま（市杵嶋姫命 いちきしまひめのみこと）が祀られています。
神社には御燈籠が４基あり そのうちの一つが福本屋によって寄進されたものです。台座に刻まれた文字は右から 福本屋内喜以 田中屋内と女中たちの名前（久良・和賀など） 杦嶋屋内子供中 とあります。「内」とは妻のことです。「子供中」とは子供たちのことです。福本屋源太郎は安政年間より幕末まで飯盛旅籠をやっていました。元は八九三（やくざ）でした。府中宿は大國魂神社の祭礼と飯盛旅籠があったことで 八九三の発生を促進しました。

巽神社には二頭の狛犬が祀られていますが 右側の狛犬は人面狛犬です。千葉県袖ケ浦市にある久保田八幡神社にも人面狛犬がありますが 巽神社の狛犬のほうが より人の顔に見えます。

Benzaiten (Ichikishimahime-no-mikoto) is enshrined at Tatsumi Shrine, one of the subordinate shrines of Okunitama Shrine.
The shrine has four sacred shinto lanterns, one of which was donated by Fukumotoya Inn. The inscriptions on the base read, from right to left, Fukumotoya’s wife Kie, Tanakaya’s wife・ names of the chambermaids(Kura・Waka…), Sugishimaya’s wife and Kodomo-Chu. "Nai" means wife. "Kodomo-Chu" means children. Fukumotoya Gentarou ran a Meshimori inn from the Ansei era until the end of the Shogunate. He was originally a Yakuza gangster. The presence of the Okunitama Shrine festivals and the Meshimori inns in Fuchu contributed to the emergence of the Yakuza gang.
Two Komainu (guardian statuettes) are enshrined at Tatsumi Shrine. The one on the right has a human face. It’s the best, I reckon, of all the human-faced guardian statuettes in Japan.
