What’s Iolani Palace?
Built in 1882 by King Kalākaua, ʻIolani Palace was the home of Hawaiʻi’s last reigning monarchs and served as the official royal residence and the residence of the Kingdom’s political and social life until the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893.
Registered as a National Historic Landmark since 1962 and the only official royal residence in the United States, the Palace is one of the most recognizable buildings in Hawaiʻi.
Tips for Families
- Take a Guided Tour: The guides know how to keep kids entertained with fun stories.
- Kamaʻāina Sunday: If you have a valid Hawaii State ID, you can get a complimentary ticket. The free event is held on the second Sunday of every month.
- King Kamehameha Statue: Be sure to visit the statue right across from here.
