A slice of history returns to Darwin! This propeller blade from World War II ship, the 'Meigs', was taken from Darwin Harbour to Japan in the early 1960s by the Fujita Salvage Company. The Japanese firm was run by Mr Fujita, who won the contract to salvage Darwin's wartime shipwrecks - a story told in our recent exhibition. Mr Fujita considered the salvage operation to be his life's work and when he died, the propeller was featured on his grave in Japan. But now it's returned to Darwin. Swing by the Darwin Memorial Uniting Church sometime on Smith Street and have a look. It's pretty extraordinary. Our recent exhibition told their family story, of the Fujita Salvage Company, a Japanese firm that came to Darwin in 1959 to salvage the remaining wartime shipwrecks in the harbour - a story of reconciliation after World War II. Back in 2010 the Fujita family donated their photo album to our library, which we recently displayed. It was fantastic to have them back here again so we could show them the album once again and give them a tour of the library.
