A pre-season marred by uncertainty has seen Anuar Manan land a contract in the most unlikely of cycling destinations -- Baku, Azerbaijan.While the former Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) points classification winner heaved a sigh of relief after being unemployed following his departure from China's Champion System Pro Cycling Team, compatriot Ng Yong Li made a move to Taiwan's RTS Racing Team.Anuar's signing for the haphazardly assembled Baku Cycling Project, Azerbaijan's first ever UCI Continental Team, is an eye opener. It was also his last option but the 27-year-old Kuala Terengganu rider sees the positive side of it."I'll have a good experienced lead-out man in Rico Rogers from Australia, while the rest of my teammates I've not met. The team will be led by David McCann, who I know quite well," said Anuar, whose one-year contract means he has signed for his sixth team in as many years.Former Jelajah Malaysia overall winner McCann, 39, of Ireland, had announced his retirement from professional cycling last October, but seems to have been coaxed into taking up a post at the new team.The force behind the establishment of the team is said to be Irishman David McQuaid, son of International Cycling Union (UCI) president, Pat.A slot for the team in the 18th Le Tour de Langkawi on Feb 21-March 2 was also reportedly sealed as a result of the team signing the crowd-pulling Anuar, who is one of the riders the organisers want in the race."Yes, David has been arranging everything. So far they've just been getting the riders together. But the team is undergoing a training camp in Melbourne, which I've yet to confirm whether I will be attending," said Anuar."I'll have a look at the programme if it is better for me to stay here to train, then I'll do that. What's important is that this will be a year where I start to establish myself again."Last year, I was criticised for my lack of results in races that were of much higher levels in Europe. People were comparing that to my previous results in UCI 2.2 races in Asia, which is not fair. So I have something to prove."The Baku Cycling Project, said Anuar, will spend the first quarter of the year racing in Asia, before heading to Europe for the remainder of the season.Following yesterday's ceremony to announce the RM800,000 sponsorship of Resorts World Berhad for the LTdL, which also retains its image on the mountains classification red jersey for the Tour, LTdL chief executive officer Emir Abdul Jalal confirmed the Azerbaijan deal."Yes it has been confirmed. Everything is sealed. So Anuar has a team and he will be racing. Yong Li has also signed for RTS, so we have all our top riders coming for the race," said Emir.Yong Li, who had been an outcast for most of last season riding for Iranian team Azad University, has moved to RTS Racing Team along with his band of loyal Colombian and Spanish teammates.Also making the switch from Azad to RTS are 2004 LTdL overall winner Freddy Gonzalez and Victor Nino, while Yong Li will be reunited at RTS with his former Spanish teammate at Le Tua Cycling Team Vidal Celis."We're also waiting for news on whether Oscar Pujols will be able to ride in LTdL. We're probably assembling for the first time for a week's training prior to LTdL, so most of it will be confirmed then," said Yong Li.
