Cyclists around Johannesburg are literally pedalling their way towards fighting to have their own lanes and tomorrow they will intensify their fight.The personal transport revolution, which is organised by Critical Mass Jozi, will see cyclists riding through the city of Johannesburg at night.Organiser of the event Melvin Neale said: “We will be engaging the municipality and residents in asking for construction of bicycle lanes and routes in Johannesburg. If people from different parts of Jozi would interact, perceptions would change and our city would become a better place.”City cyclists are expected to come out in droves to show that cycling is a viable and sustainable transport system.Neale said the organisation aims to incorporate inner city communities in bicycle rides and donate bicycles to inner city community projects, while asking for facilities and raising road safety awareness by training and education.A cycling block party will be hosted tonight with the cycling procession starting from the corner of De Beer and Juta streets in Braamfontein at 7.15pm, past the corner of Kotze and Quartz streets, then to Hillbrow at 8.30pm.At 10pm the cyclists will ride back to the starting point. “Critical Mass Jozi seeks to break down social and economic barriers in the city by bringing inner-city and suburban residents together socially, in parts of the city where this would not usually happen,” Neale said.Last year, the city of Johannesburg launched its Street Alive campaign, in a bid to promote alternate modes of transport to motor vehicles.Nthatisi Modingoane spokesperson for the municipality urged the community to support the initiative. “The municipality wanted to improve public transport but also encourage cycling and walking, the object is to reduce emissions and congestion on the roads.
