Thousands of shoppers are expected to flock to the 125,000 sq ft Debenhams when it is opened by clothes designer Jeff Banks at 10am.

The store is the flagship retailer in the Pounds 360 million SouthGate development and will outstrip the city's Marks & Spencer and Jolly's shops in size.

"It's brilliant to see it all come together," said senior store manager Robert Gough, who received the keys from the builders two- and-a-half weeks ago.

As well as opening the store, Banks will be unveiling his design for the Lions of Bath public art project, before hosting Air Max 95 Mens an event for shoppers in the menswear department at 12.30pm.

Debenhams has recruited 200 employees who, over the past few days, have been putting the finishing touches to the store - including giant canvases featuring scenes from the city.

SouthGate general manager Simon Pullen said: "The opening of Debenhams represents the third and final phase of the main SouthGate development."

KOLKATA: A booty of Rs 2 crore - one of the biggest ever robberies in Kolkata. And not a gun or knife used.

Three middle-aged, portly men convincingly played out the part of income tax officials, duped a businessman's wife and walked off with briefcases full of hard cash from a Beliaghata home on Thursday. The trio even left behind a receipt for the money they had 'seized'. It was for Rs 90 lakh, though, not the Rs 2 crore that they had filched. Police have no clue yet about the fraudsters but have a strong suspicion that someone known to handbags h the family is involved, especially in passing on information about the money.

The conmen arrived at Tarachand Daftari's third-floor apartment on Hemchandra Naskar Road in east Kolkata at 2.20pm. Tarachand's wife Manju, 44, answered the bell and found three men, dressed in formals and holding briefcases, at the door. With a business like attitude, the three entered the flat, announced they were from the I-T department and whipped out an official looking document, saying it was a search warrant. They even showed Manju their 'ID cards', said detective department chief Damayanti Sen.

"This is a raid. You cannot go out. Sit tight," they told Manju. She was alone in the house then. Tarachand and all other male members were at his electrical cables shop on Ganesh Chandra Avenue, around 10 km away. And her three daughters were in school.

Rattled, Manju tried to call her husband on his cellphone but the trio sternly forbade her. They told her that the house was surrounded by police and simultaneous raids were on at Tarachand's shop and the house of a close relative in Phoolbagan. Manju had no way but to sit in a corner. During the search, the trio found a bag containing cash and 'seized' it but left ornaments worth a few lakh rupees.

"The gang accused Manju of hoarding black money and asked her to count the notes. Before she could complete counting, they issued a 'seizure list', as I-T officers do, mentioning that Rs 90 lakh had been seized on behalf of the I-T department. They handed over the list to Manju," said a police officer.

After spending a half-hour in the flat, the 'I-T team' left. Manju immediately called up her husband to inform him about the 'raid'. Tarachand was stunned. He hurried home. One glance at the 'seizure list' told him it was fake and his wife had been duped by a smart gang.

He informed Beliaghata police station and told them the bag the gang took away had Rs 2 crore. Police said Tarachand had got the money by selling off a plot in Phoolbagan. "He had the bag at home since April 13," said Sen. Police have learnt all three men spoke in Bengali. Investigators suspect an insider had tipped off the gang about the money and when they could catch Manju alone. Police have lodged a case of cheating, impersonation and forgery.
