Dear Patients, In times of uncertainty, we look to previous patterns and science to make the best decisions. I have been monitoring the situation closely and have been in touch with European colleagues who are on the front lines in the hospitals taking care of sick patients. I take their words and advice seriously, they are suggesting that people in the US socially distance now. Therefore, I am going to be closing our offices until March 30th. To those who need to be seen urgently I will come in or make arrangements. Please call the office, we will answer. We are now working on contingency plans to meet our patients desires if the interim period persists beyond a couple weeks. I am confident we will get through this a& be stronger on the other side of it. This is not a Nuclear Armageddon nor a celestial cataclysmic event. Toilet paper, water & basic necessities will be available. Most people do not die from COVID-19 and most are barely symptomatic. Yes, it is affecting the frail far more severely but in Italy there are multiple cases of young and middle age adults being struck down. The sooner we isolate from each other the sooner we get around it. As a physician, I will ask my patients to please refrain from social gatherings. Be cognizant of those who are sick, elderly or immunocompromised. Teenagers and the young seem to be the least effected and don’t understand the contagious nature of the virus, so it is incumbent upon all parents to act in the best interest of others and keep their kids in the house and away from friends. To those who think social isolating is overreacting you may be right. But neither you nor I will decide… rather it will be history who will judge. I don’t believe this is a time to panic rather the opposite, it is time to be under control & to use our rational mind to act with a purpose. We may be in the midst of an historical extraordinary event and if so it requires extraordinary measures. A commitment to being smart, safe and courageous is what we do best, and it is what we can do now. I look forward to the near future when we can all look back on this as a distant memory. Cautious, caring & conscientious regards, Steve Dayan, MD
