Fundraising in Taipei for quake-hit Kumamoto
A Taiwanese shop has started raising funds for people affected by the strong earthquakes in Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture.
The store was opened in Taipei last year by a Kumamoto-based firm. It sells products, including goods related to Kumamon, a mascot created by the prefectural government.
Three million people visited Japan from Taiwan last year, and the chubby, red-cheeked mascot is well known in Taiwan.
The shop's manager, Hiroshi Yatsunami, is from Kumamoto City. He says he finds that Taiwanese people feel very close to Japan, and he wants to send the donations to those areas most in need. He plans to send part of the proceeds to support relief activities.
One of the shoppers said she visited Kumamoto to sightsee and that she hopes for a strong recovery by the people there.
People in Kumamoto collected donations after a quake killed 117 people in southern Taiwan in February.
The government of President Ma Ying-jeou announced it will donate around 600,000 dollars for Japanese people affected by the quakes.
Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party, which will take power next month, also decided to donate more than 30,000 dollars.
The mayors of Kaohsiung and Tainan say they will each donate a month's worth of their salary.
After the 2011 disaster in eastern Japan, donations from Taiwan came to about 20 billion yen, or roughly 180 million dollars at the current exchange rate.
