When the beads are threaded onto the working yarn, they should be able to move freely along the yarn. They should be introduced onto the right side of the fabric by pushing the bead up close to the hook and working the stitch in the usual way, so that the bead remains at the right side.

Beads must be threaded onto the ball of yarn before the work starts. If the hole in the center of the bead is large enough, it can be threaded directly onto the working yarn using a sewing needle, or a special narrow-eyed beading needle. Where the hole is too small, the beads can be threaded onto the yarn using a fine sewing needle or beading needle and a loop of thread. Most patterns will tell you exactly how many beads should be threaded onto the yarn, but if there is any doubt, it is always better to thread too many than to have too few beads. Make sure any beads used on your finished garment can be washed or dry-cleaned without damage to either the beads or the garment.

These are very fashionable these days, and tend to add a perfect finishing touch to any home crocheted garment. This concept is age-old and has been used for a great number of years, but to date, some people who home crochet still can't seem to grasp the concept.

In my opinion, glass beads should never be used on any children's garments for safety reasons; however, it is up to your discretion if you want to use glass beads on a child's completed garment.

I prefer to use the plastic beads - sure, sometimes they crack due to our weather elements, but my main concern is the safety of the child wearing such a garment. Plastic beads can be laundered even if they make quite a sound when they are being dried.

I also tend to use color-coordinated beads to match the garment I am crocheting at the time. If the color is not available that I am seeking (very unusual), I usually use the clear beads--just so they make the garment stand out and achieve the desired look. I want this completed project to stand out as being exclusive; however, with some "wild-color" beads, you can achieve a splashy look for any occasion if you practice this method before utilizing it for any special occasion.

On my first time home crocheting with beads, I kept forgetting to move the beads in place before working in my next stitch, so be careful. I don't deny that at first, this takes concentration. Before long, you move those beads into place automatically for that look you are trying to achieve.

I will caution you on this little matter though - make sure your beads go to the right side of your work or your efforts will be made in vain! Depending on the size, color and type of beads you are working with, this can be difficult at times. Working with larger beads almost always ensures that the beads show up on the right side of your work.

I love working with beads on completed home crocheted projects for female children - they tend to feel special and state with real pride that Mommy or Grandma made this for them. They stand out from the crowd and if we are going to crochet a garment for a loved child, isn't that the point?
