在戶外，強烈陽光一直是眼睛的頭號殺手，白內障的主要致因。在室內，電腦背光則是新世代的眼睛殺手；從白內障、青光眼，到黃斑部病變、視網膜剝離等等，都看得到它的如影隨形。
每天看螢幕超過8小時，眼睛傷害難以想像。
有專家表示，每天看螢幕「超過2個小時」，就算是過度；會導致眼睛疲勞、視力模糊、頭痛、近視和散光等問題。但現在，真正的問題是，不是每天「超過2個小時」，而是更多的「超過4個小時」或「超過8個小時」。
我個人的慘痛經驗是，每天看電腦螢幕超過8個小時，在寫完第一本30萬字的教科書《工程倫理》後，左眼出現了飛蚊症。在寫完第二本教科書《OLED導論》的時候，右眼出現飛蚊症，外加乾式黃斑部病變。所以，當出版社要我寫第三本《材料科學概論》的時候， 我真的非常猶豫，因為我沒有第三隻眼睛了。
「你可以用傳統的方式，慢慢撰寫，而不要用電腦啊！」為人非常客氣、有禮的書局資深業務思凱，這麼建議著。但不用電腦，我是寫不了書的；尤其，在撰寫的過程中，大量的資料閱讀、證據查詢，絕對得藉助電腦上網不可。
