アルバム 『 ピアノ・マン 』 は ビリーとして ２作目のアルバムで
出世作です。
そこからの第１弾シングルとしてリリースされたビリーの傑作曲のひとつです。
歌の内容は、
弾き語りで生計を立てていた頃のビリーの体験を元にしたもので、
全米２５位を記録しています。
ビリーの代名詞と言える代表曲で、
２０００年代に至るまでライヴの定番曲となり
歌詞の繰り返し部分を オーディエンスが大合唱するのが
定番になっているようです。
３拍子のリズムが心地よい楽曲で、
トラッド・フォークを思わせるような叙情的なメロディ・ラインが、
心にしみわたる優れた作品だと思います。
この曲を聴くと、 不思議と頭の中がスッキリして 気分がよくなるのは
私だけではないと思います。
日本でも愛されていて、 ＣＭソングに時々
使われています。
