日本のバンドでも、コープスペイントや白塗りのヴィジュアルを取り入れている例を見かけますが、実際に楽曲やMVを聴いてみると、どうしても「日本人向けに作られた楽曲」という印象を拭えないことが多いです。
良くも悪くも、歌メロがすべてを支配しているというか……。
これはデスコアやメタルコア系のバンドにも言えることですが、作曲者が本当に“メタル”という音楽を愛しているかどうかは、意外と聴けばわかるものだと思います。
「メタル」という言葉が含まれていても、メタルコアやデスコアは、クラシックなヘヴィメタルやデスメタルとは明確に違うと感じています。
その点、Deathrollについて言えば、見た目はブラックメタルの典型とは異なるかもしれませんが、近作の楽曲においては、曲調においてブラックメタルの本質をしっかり表現できていると自負しています。
Even among Japanese bands, we often see groups adopting corpse paint or white-painted visuals. However, when I actually listen to their songs or watch their music videos, I can’t help but feel that the music is ultimately tailored for a Japanese audience.
For better or worse, the vocal melodies seem to dominate everything.
This also applies to bands in the deathcore or metalcore scenes. I believe it’s often quite easy to tell, just by listening, whether the composer truly loves metal as a genre.
Even if the word “metal” is part of the name, I feel that metalcore and deathcore are clearly different from classic heavy metal or death metal.
In that regard, while Deathroll may not visually align with typical black metal aesthetics, I take pride in the fact that the recent compositions have been able to express the essence of black metal in their musical style.
