「be about to」~するところ。
この表現は日本語でも良く使えますし、ネイティブもかなり頻繁に使っています。
「まだみんな何してるの?」と聞かれて、「家に帰るところだった。」と答えたんですね。
「were」をと使っているので「ところだった」。
ここで「We are about to head home」と言っていれば、「帰るとこだよ」と微妙なニュアンスの違いが出てきますね。
あんた勉強もしないで何してるの!って怒られたら「I'm about to study!」って答えましょう!ちょうど勉強するところだよ!って。
I suppose it depends whether or not you are lying under the duvet or lying on top of it (or what ever covers you have on your bed). Under it and you are in bed. On top of it and you are lying on your bed.
ただベットに横になってるか布団の中にいるかのニュアンスの違いのようです!
