今日5月24日は『聖霊降臨日』、英語ではPentecostですね。
そこで、今さらながらではありますし、頁が飛んでしまいますが、市河三喜博士の著作に基づいてPentecostの意味を確認しておきましょう。
市河博士はPentecostについて旧新約聖書に基づき次の2つを挙げておられるます（市河、173頁）
1) Jewish harvest festival, on the fiftieth day from the wave offering on the second day of the Passover(Lev.XXIII 15,16). Also called the "feast of weeks" in Exod.XXXIV 22.
2) a festival of the Christian Church observed on the seventh Sunday after Easter, in commemorationn of the decent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples on the day of Pentecost (Acts II); the day of this festival, Whit-Sunday.
２）は教会カレンダー上、今日の聖書箇所そのものですので、ここでは敢えて触れず、１）の旧約聖書箇所について観ていきましょう。
順序が逆になりますが、Exod.XXXIV 22aつまり出エジプト記34章22a節には次のように書かれています。
And you shall observe the feast of weeks, the first fruits of wheat harvest.(RSV)
あなたは、小麦の収穫の初穂の時に、七週祭を祝いなさい。（新共同訳)
英語訳聖書ではthe feast of weeksとなっていますが、日本語聖書では七週祭と訳されています。七週つまり約50日という数字に注目しましょう。
次に、Leviticus 23:15-16、レビ記23章15〜16節には
And you shall count from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven full weeks shall they be, counting fifty days to the morrow after the seventh sabbath; then you shall present a cereal offering of new grain to the Lord. (RSV)
あなたたちはこの安息日の翌日、すなわち、初穂を携え奉納物とする日から数え始め、満七週間を経る。七週間を経た翌日まで、五十日を数えたならば、主に新穀の献げ物をささげる。(新共同訳）
ここでfifty days （五十日）という言葉が出てきますね。
聖霊降臨日の英語Pentecostの語源は50番目を意味するギリシャ語のπεντηκοστήなのです。
