OPENING

Rosa: Hey everyone, this is Akino Rosa.

David: Hi everyone, I'm David Evans, it's time for the review.

Lesson 70 REVIEW

LISTENING CHALLENGE

David: Okay, let's review this week's dialogues.

Rosa: Listen to the questions and pick which one of the three options is the correct answer.

MONDAY'S DIALOGUE

David: Let's start with Monday's dialog.

Rosa: Here's the question.

Question: What was found in the time capsule?

Choices are:

A. Something unusual.

B. An electric guitar.

C. 1865 devices.

Here we go.

Jessica: Professor Peacock, did you hear about the time capsule they discovered in Oxford?

Peacock: Yes, Mana, my niece, was talking about that recently.

Jessica: Well, they found something unusual inside it.

Peacock: What did they find?

Jessica: It appears to be some kind of advanced electronic device.

Peacock: What's unusual about that?

Jessica: The time capsule was buried in 1865. There were no such electronic devices back then.

Peacock: Hmm. I wonder if someone put it in there later.

Jessica: That's highly unlikely.

Peacock: Then we have a mystery on our hands.

The answer is A. Something unusual.

TUESDAY'S DIALOGUE

David: Okay, now let's move on to Tuesday's dialogue. Here's the question.

Question: Why did William visit Professor Peacock's office?

Choices are:

A. Because he had some questions.

B. Because he wanted to take Professor Peacock's class.

C. Because he needed to take Professor Peacock to another university.

Listen up!

Jessica: Oh, hello. Um, where is Professor Peacock?

William: He stepped out for a second.

Jessica: Do you know when he'll be back?

William: Not sure, but probably soon. Would you tell me why you're here?

Jessica: I had some questions for the professor.

William: Oh, me too. My name's William. I'm in his Roman studies class.

Jessica: Nice to meet you. I'm Jessica. I'm in that class too, but I've never seen you before.

William: Oh, well, I've just transferred from another university.

Jessica: Interesting.

The answer is A. Because he had some questions.

WEDNESDAY'S DIALOGUE

Rosa: Moving on, Wednesday's dialogue. Here's the question.

Question: Who is Yayoi?

Choices are:

A. An actor who is well-known in Japan.

B. An international student who is learning Japanese.

C. A member of an international company.

Listen carefully.

Kelly: Arnold, I'm surprised that you speak Japanese. My husband is Japanese, so I know a few phrases myself.

Arnold: I do. In fact, a few years ago we made a movie in Tokyo.

Kelly: Right, I heard about that. There was one unknown Japanese actor.

Arnold: Yes, Yayoi was her name. I thought she was great.

Kelly: Did she speak to you in English?

Arnold: Yes, she did. She works for an international company.

Kelly: Sorry, what did you say her name was again?

Arnold: Yayoi. Spelled Y-A-Y-O-I.

Kelly: Got it. Thanks!

The answer is C. A member of an international company.

THURSDAY'S DIALOGUE

David: All right, last up is Thursday's dialogue. Here's the question.

Question: What is the bad news?

Choices are:

A. Deepak is not there anymore.

B. The two people can't have curry there.

C. Barbara is full.

Here we go!

Vincent: Barbara, is this the restaurant you were talking about?

Barbara: Yes, the best curry in Japan is served here. In my opinion, anyway.

Vincent: Well, I'm starving. I can't wait.

Barbara: Wow, it's crowded tonight. Let me talk to Deepak. Wait here.

Vincent: Sure. I'll just be checking my phone…

Barbara: Bad news, Vincent. Deepak said the restaurant is full. Let's go somewhere else.

Vincent: Oh no! I was really looking forward to this.

Barbara: We can come back another day.

The answer is B. The two people can't have curry there.

SAY IT IN ENGLISH!

Rosa: Okay, here's the first situation.

Situation 1:

A: You look sad.

B: I wonder if my boyfriend still loves me. Yesterday was my birthday. I was expecting a nice present, but he gave me cash, saying, "Buy whatever you want". What do you think I should do?

I wonder if my boyfriend still loves me. Yesterday was my birthday. I was expecting a nice present, but he gave me cash, saying, "Buy whatever you want".

whatever you want「あなたが欲しいものは何でも」。

What do you think I should do?

David: All right! Let's move on to the next situation.

Situation 2:

[ヒント]気がつく realize / まったく~ない not at all / これから・これからずっと from now on

A: So, you gave her cash as her birthday present, right?

B: Actually, I went to some stores to choose a nice present for her, but I just ended up realizing I don't know her at all. I don't know what she wants, what color she likes, anything. From now on, I'll try to know her better.

Actually, I went to some stores to choose a nice present for her, but I just ended up realizing I don't know her at all.

ended up の後ろに and I realized (そして~に気がつきました)とつなげてもOK

I don't know what she wants, what color she likes, anything. From now on, I'll try to know her better.

knowの後ろにwhat she wants, what color she likesとwh節。

ENDING

Rosa: Hope you guys enjoyed our lesson.

David: Keep doing your best and keep speaking all you can.
