My daughter has gone to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to challenge a new job. It’s good to challenge.
I understand my wife’s family how they felt when she left Malaysia for Japan more than 5 decades ago. Now I know how much they missed their daughter.
These days, I sometimes see a kind of notice on the wall of shopping malls saying “Ambulances are not taxis”, “The number of ambulance is limited”.
この頃、時々ショッピングモールの壁に貼ってあるポスターに「救急車はタクシーではない」とか「救急車の数は限られている」とか書かれているのを見かけます。
I know these phrases are to appeal to stop unnecessary use of ambulance and I understand what they mean.
私はこれらの言葉が不必要な救急車の使用を止めるように訴えるものであり、その主旨は理解しています。
But it makes some people hesitate to call for ambulances in case of the emergency situation.
しかしそれはいくらかの人々に緊急時に救急車を呼ぶことを躊躇させることもあります。
As for me, when I felt something wrong with my eyesight, I hesitated to call for an ambulance because it was difficult for me to judge whether it was necessary or unnecessary.
Firstly the phrase came to me, “Unnecessary use of ambulance”.
私事で恐縮ですが、視力に異変を感じた時に救急車を呼ぶのを躊躇してしまった、それが必要か不必要か判断することは私にとっては難しかったからです。そのとき最初に浮かんだのは「不必要な救急車の使用」という言葉だった。
As a result, it was a wrong judgment.
I believe if I had called for an ambulance and received quick treatment, I wouldn’t have lost my eyesight.
結果的にその判断は間違っていました。もしあのとき私が救急車を呼んですぐに治療を受けていたら視力を失うことはなかったと信じています。
Another case is about one of my close friends. He had heart attack on the street and some passersby asked him if he would need an ambulance but he said, “No thank you. I can walk home by myself.” Just after he got home, he passed away.
Since I had known his character well, I could understand why he turned down the passersby’s proposal at that time.
It was very regretful.
もう一つのケースは私の親友に関してです。彼は路上で心臓発作になり通りがかりの人が彼に救急車を呼ぶ必要があるか訊いてくれたが彼は「自分で帰れますから」と断ったそうです。彼は帰宅後すぐに亡くなりました。私は彼との付き合いが長いので彼が通りがかりの人の申し出をなぜ断ったのか理解できます。痛恨の想いです。
英語を何十年もしてきて疑問に感じることは、英語の学習になぜ意味不明な日本語を使うのかということです。
初めて中学で英語を習ったとき、それまで聞いたこともない日本語、一人称、二人称、三人称とか関係代名詞、補語など、特に不定詞は「定まらない言葉」なんて意味不明な言葉が授業の中でどんどん使われる。
英語の単語の意味の前に先ずこれらの日本語の意味を理解するのに悪戦苦闘です。
多分、これらの言葉は英語からの直訳だと思いますが、どこの偉い先生が訳したのか知りませんがもう少し分かりやすい言葉に訳して欲しかった。
英文法の参考書などに「これは副詞節なので…名詞節はこの限りではない」とか説明してあっても副詞節は何？名詞節は何？となりますね。
読んでも分か らない参考書など参考にならない！
こういうことが英語嫌いを作り出しているように感じます。
