仙川の小さなピアノ教室 The Yamada School of Music です。
英語でピアノを、インターナショナルスクールに通う生徒さんや帰国子女のお子さんに教えていますが、もちろん近所の公立学校に通っている生徒さんもたくさん来てくれています ：）
12月に入り街の空気もすっかりクリスマスらしくなってきましたね。
当教室では、毎年10月頃からある取り組みを始めています。
それは 「1人1曲クリスマス曲チャレンジ」 です 😊
チャレンジというより週1回のレッスンというリズムだからこそ、
10月頃にそんなに難しくないアレンジのクリスマス曲をスタートすると・・・
ちょうど街がサンタさんやツリーで華やぐ頃に1曲仕上がります。
子どもたちには “季節の贈り物” のような気持ちでクリスマス曲を渡しています✨
日本ではハロウィンが終わるとすぐ街中がクリスマスムードになりますが、アメリカでは11月最後の週の感謝祭（Thanksgiving）が終わると一気にクリスマスの雰囲気に変わります。学校によってはクリスマス曲のリハーサルが8月の新学期から始まったりと、地域や学校の文化でいろいろです😊
そして日本ではそこまで馴染みがないかもしれませんがアメリカでは「讃美（Hymns）」のクリスマス曲もとても身近な存在です。
とはいえ・・・讃美歌はご家庭の宗教観も関わるところなのでこちらから積極的におすすめすることはしていませんが生徒さん達が通っている学校がカトリック系・クリスチャン系だったりすると、
「あ、この曲知ってる！」
「学校で歌いだしたから弾きたい！」
と子どもたちが自ら持ってきてくれることもあります。
そんな時はその子のレベルに合わせた難易度の楽譜を探してレッスンしています。
アメリカのクリスマス教材はとても豊富なのでリクエストに応えられることも多いです。
12月は街のきらめきと同じように子どもたちのワクワクがレッスンにも広がる季節。
「サンタさんくるかな？😊」を合言葉に色々な世代の生徒達とピアノで遊んでいます。

This is The Yamada School of Music, a little piano studio here in Sengawa.
I teach piano in English to international school kids and returnees, but of course, many children from our local public schools also come to learn with us :)
Now that December is here, everything in town is starting to look and feel like Christmas🎄
Around this time every year, actually starting in October, we begin a fun little tradition at the studio.
It’s our “One Christmas Song Challenge.” 😊
I call it a challenge, but it’s really more of a seasonal project.
Since lessons are once a week, starting a simple Christmas piece in October means the kids can finish it right when the town is full of Santa decorations and Christmas lights.
It feels like giving each student a tiny “seasonal present.” 🎁✨
In Japan, Christmas decorations appear the moment Halloween ends.
In the U.S., everything switches to Christmas mode right after Thanksgiving in late November. But depending on the school, Christmas music rehearsals might even start in August at the beginning of the school year. It really depends on the school culture.
One thing that’s very familiar in the U.S.but not so much in Japan is Christmas hymns. Because hymns are connected to each family’s religious background,
I don’t actively recommend them myself.
But for kids who attend Catholic or Christian schools, it’s very common to hear:
“Oh! I know this song!”
“We started singing this at school, can I learn it on the piano?”
When that happens, I look for sheet music at the right level and we work on it together.
There are so many American Christmas books and arrangements that I can usually find something that fits 🎹✨
December is a month when the sparkle of the season shows up in the kids’ excitement during lessons.
Our little motto becomes: “Do you think Santa will come? 😊”
And with that, I get to enjoy making music with students of all ages.
