It is chilly and stormy here... so Austin and I decided to cheer ourselves up with a really good mug of hot chocolate.
I used to have homemade hot chocolate all the time as a kid.
One of my favorite things.
Not many people do it anymore.
Easier to buy it premixed.
We do on occasion.
But I still like to make my own.
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup Baking Cocoa (we used Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa)
4 cups of milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
whipped cream or marshmallows
^^^^ we added a surprise to it... lol
combine the sugar and the cocoa in a medium saucepan
stir
gradually add in 1/3 cup of milk
makes a smooth paste
then add in the rest of the milk an keep stirring.
don't boil the milk of course... it should be a hot steamed milk.
then stir in the vanilla or other flavor extract you want to use... then put into a mug.
top with the marshmallows or whipped cream
This is our favorite kind of vanilla.
Our friends bring it back for us from Mexico.
Smells great... and is perfect to cook with.
Just don't lick your finger if it gets on it... yuck.. on its own - it tastes terrible.
This - was our surprise... lol
Hershey's mini milk chocolate kisses.
I put 10 in the bottom of each of our mugs.
Here is the package.
We may make those cookies soon too (the ones on the package)
They are awesome!
See the kisses are melting.
According to Hershey's - if you put kisses in your hot chocolate.. they are "Oyasumi Kisu"...
Good Night Kisses.
You are supposed to have sweet dreams after drinking the hot chocolate this way.
It is very creamy and delicious.
So we will say it is true... it is blissful.
Smells divine too.
The entire house smells like chocolate and vanilla
What it looks like done... lol... need a spoon to keep stirring the melted kisses into the drink.
You can also top the whipped cream (if used) with the powdered chocolate or mini candy canes like you use in baking.
Looks pretty and gives it a bit more of a flavor punch.
I ate an orange while drinking it.
Sets off the chocolate flavor on your palate.
If you want to make it different.
You can add one of the following to make it by flavors you like:
orange extract - like a specialty chocolate
mint extract - for a zing
Raspberry or Cherry for a berry & chocolate mix
Ours was dark chocolate and milk chocolate... so a double chocolate mix.
