両眼性無眼球症(全盲)とたくさんの障害を持って生まれた娘を育てながら、日米の架け橋となるべく東奔西走しています。
暗闇の中を手探りで歩いてきた当時の経験から、周囲に「助けて」と言える社会づくりを目指した活動を行っています。

次は、脳神経内科の診察だった。
担当のW医師は、持参した数枚のMRI検査写真をしばらく眺めていた。
私たちを気遣ってか、非常にゆっくりと穏やかな口調で話を始めた。
「私の所見では、今のところ脳に異常は認められません。
誕生直後に見られた血痕のようなものは消失しているようです。
ただ、2度目の写真でホルモンをつかさどる一部分がよく見えないのが気になります。
ベビーの脳はとても小さいので、実際は異常がなくてもよく見えない部分があるのは珍しいことではありません。
念のため検査を受けて下さい」
「脳は正常」の言葉に安堵する間もなく、また新たな問題が発覚かと、不安がよぎる。
Next up was a visit to Dr. W, a neurologist.
She spent a while at first looking over the MRI scans we brought with us.
She started speaking to us in a very slow and gentle tone, perhaps out of concern.
“From what I can tell, there is no abnormality in her brain at present.
What looked like internal bleeding right after your daughter was born has cleared up. However, I am concerned that I cannot clearly identify the hormone-producing part of her brain in the latest scans.
It’s possible that there’s no issue and it’s just that babies’ brains are very small and difficult to see, but I recommend you get a follow-up MRI done just in case.”
The relief I felt at hearing her brain was functioning normally was immediately overtaken by my fear of another problem coming to light.
