草間彌生氏は、今、世界で一番有名なアーティストの一人。
草間ワールドが無料で見られるといえば、
ニューヨーカーはとにかく並ぶ。
炎天下でも氷点下でも、並ぶ。
今冬で一番寒かった氷点下７度の朝。
ハドソン川から吹き込む風で、体感温度はマイナス15度以下。
開店時間の午前10時には、すでに３ブロックの長蛇の列。
手足の感覚もなくなるほどの寒さの中、
建物に入った時には、すでにランチタイム。
建物の中では、６−８人ずつにグループ分けされる。
最初の部屋は鏡張りの銀世界、インフィニティ（無限）。
足元に並んだステンレスのボールと自分がどこまでも広がる。
フットカバーを履いて、鮮やかなLEDライトの部屋を覗き込む。
自分が万華鏡の中にいるような、不思議な感覚。
草間ワールドは「永遠のつながり」、どこまでも終わりがない。
幼少の頃から、幻聴や幻覚に襲われ続けているという。
そこから回避して、そこを表現するのが、草間氏の世界観。
最後の部屋には、赤い水玉と歪んだチューリップ。
水玉の中に埋もれていると、なぜか方向感覚が麻痺してくる。
とにかくひたすら自分の世界観を貫き通す。
草間氏独自の世界観は、今や世界で一番共感を得るアートになった。
近年の作品が一覧できる隣のギャラリーも必見。
風邪引いたけれど、並んだ甲斐があった。
一緒に並んでくれた親友に、心からの感謝を込めて。

The stainless silver ball and our figure were spread for infinity.
We wore foot covers and looked into the room filled with brilliant LED lights.
A strange feeling that we were in a kaleidoscope.
The Kusama World is an "eternal connection", there is no end to anything.
It is said that she has been attacked by illusions and hallucinations since childhood.
It is Mr. Kusama's view of the world to avoid it and express it there.
In the last room, a red polka dots and a distorted tulip.
When buried in a polka dot, sense of direction was paralyzed for some reason.
