The other day, while waiting for the zaru soba I ordered at a soba restaurant, the loud slurping sound of a middle-aged man filled the shop.

I felt a bit uncomfortable, but I also found it fun, because I realized I was truly in Japan.

By the way, the nutrients in soba are water-soluble and dissolve into the hot water while soba is boiled, so be sure to drink the soba-yu, or the cooking water, when you eat soba at a soba restaurant.

Zaru soba is a dish of cold soba noodles, served on a bamboo tray called a "zaru".  It is typically eaten by dipping the noodles in a sauce made from soy sauce, dashi, and mirin.
