その生涯に実に１６人もの子供を産んでおり、
マリー・アントワネットはその第１５子であった。
愛情深い母親であったマリア・テレジアは、
とりわけ、人生にたいして一番無防備そうな
末娘のマリー・アントワネットを可愛がっており、
彼女のために、ヨーロッパで最も美しく強大な
王国の王妃の座を確保してやった。
マリー・アントワネットは、偉大な母の血を
受け、頭も良く優れた資質に恵まれていながら、
気が散りやすく集中力に欠け、なにごとにつけ
真面目に考えるということを好まない子供だった。
そして不幸なことに彼女は、この性向を改善し
克服することのないまま、フランス王妃という
地位を手に入れてしまったのである。
