DO Pagosを試飲するのは初めてだったので、Flight 1-3のDOについて調べてみました。
Dominio de Valdepusa (La Mancha)
Pago Dominio de Valdepusa belongs to the archetypal Spanish “maverick” producer, the Marqués de Griñon, who has owned the bodega since the 1970s.
It lies in the extreme west of Castilla-La Mancha at an altitude of 550 metres. Rainfall averages 450 mm, sunshine hours average 3,000 and the temperature range is only -5oC to 26oC. Soils are clay and limestone.
The estates comprises 50 ha of vineyard on clay and limestone, at around 500 metres, with only black grapes: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Graciano.
This Pago lay outside any existing DO area and had nothing in common with the nearest two (which include La Mancha). It was not even a VdlT because there was no VdlT area for Toledo. In earlier days the wine was therefore sold as Vino de mesa de Toledo (i.e. Table Wine).
Because these were originally outside the DO system, he did not use terms such as Crianza and he was not bound by any regulations on length of ageing – each wine (and each vintage, even each cask) was aged for what was considered the appropriate amount of time.
Production is around 300,000 bottles per year.
