そして、二年目となる一九七六年のオールスター戦の期間中にケガの治療のために一時帰国しようとするジョンソンと長嶋監督との前半最終戦後のやりとり。
"... Johnson had emerged from the team shower, wearing only a towel around his waist, still dripping water, when Nagashima approached with Tanuma the interpreter and asked, 'Are you really leaving?'
"'Yes,' said Johnson, 'I'm going to see a specialist, Dr. Robert Kerlan in L.A. But I'll be back in three days. I promise.'
"Nagashima, certain Johnson would not return exploded, 'Liar!' he roared, livid with fury, and yanked Johnson's towel off. "If you were a real man," he yelled, pointing between Johnson's legs, 'if you had two balls like a real man, you wouldn't be going. But you're not a man. You're a woman.'
Then he stormed out of the room.
"1"'I almost punched him' Johnson told a friend later, 'But I didn't do it because I realized he just wasn't capable of appreciating my thinking or my situation. So I picked up the towel, got dressed, and left.'
これはよく知られた話である。殴ろうかと思わせるほど、長嶋茂雄に対する不信感は相当なものだったのだろう。しかし、この長嶋監督の発言をここにある通りにそのまま信用することもできない。なぜなら、これがジョンソンが聞いたままだとすると（引用符付なのだから）、それは田沼通訳が彼にそう伝えたということになる。通訳経験が長い者としては、こんな言葉で伝えることはまずありえないという思いだ。文章を、まあ日本語にすれば、「てめえ、本物の男のようにタマが二個あるなら帰国なんかするはずねえだろ」ということか。真実を知るには田沼通訳にたずねてみる他はない。そして余談になるが、同年六月にアントニオ猪木とモハメド・アリの試合があったが、寝転んでばかりの猪木に対してアリが、
"Inoki is a woman!"
と繰り返し叫んでいたのを思い出したりする。
