This project dates back 17 years. In 2005, I used the iMac Rev.D in my daily work. To be exact, I was doing the printing work with this. Previously Canon laser printers were slow on OSX. So I needed a Mac with OS9 for printing. But one day the flyback transformer broke. I used to go to this time many times to replace the flyback transformer. I would have repaired about 5 iMacs, including my friends. However, at the same time, I got the SE/30, which had a battery bomb exploding. Without hesitation, I decided to install the iMac logic board on my SE/30.

She is now 20 years old...

 

This completed SE/30 iMac has many memories. No one but me knew what this little Mac was, with my eldest daughter watching a DVD and my employees doing printing work. The printing was also a black and white laser printer, so he did the job without any problems.

OS9 has gone down, and printing work can now be done faster with OSX. Due to the evolution of the times, this SE/30 was left unattended for a while, and it was forgotten where it went.

Ahhhh, It's very dirty monster and can't stand to see...

 

In 2022 I rediscovered my old friend at the back of the closet. This will be the last vintage Mac I bring from home to my office. This decaying SE/30-iMac didn't boot anymore. I wanted to shed light on him again and decided to repair it and remake it clean again.

 

 

The repair itself was easy…

 

 

I noticed that the ATX power supply is bad. When I converted and connected the wiring of the FLEX-ATX PSU in stock, my SE/30 came back to life. Yay, He was alive! I did the necessary recapping and tested the boot. The DVD was replaced by a relatively new one with a black bezel from the original DVD for some reason. I thought this Mac was the best at the time, but now it's junk. In 17 years my skills have improved considerably. I have a lot of experience in restoring Porsche and others. I was convinced that if I remade it now, I could make something better.

 

 

 

Assembling the PSU

PSU is a modified Flex-ATX. But an optocoupler is used for power-on inversion. I prefer optcouplers to transistor controls that require pull-ups. A large-capacity relay is used to control the power supply of the CRT. It is 5V and can control 12Amp of AC120V. I also attached a voltmeter to this. I completely forgot to monitor 3.3V, but it's OK because I calibrated it properly.

Processing of analog board

 

 

The analog board and tube are Taiwanese TVS-9, a black and white monitor that was popular around 2000. I used a second-hand item that was sold at the time for monitoring McDonald's drive-through. This is an excellent board capable of displaying 800X600. Since it was for office work in 2005, I set it up at 800X600, but this time I set it up at 60Hz of 640X480.

The analog board was initially installed parallel to the chassis, but since it is quite ugly, I set it sideways like a genuine SE analog board.

The bakelite board is cut to the same size and used as a base. I was able to do it quite well. I made a fan mounter and a fence with a 3D printer.

My good friend, Drake’s IC devil, love it! I made some stickers.

 

The CRT tube wasn't very clean, so I made it look nice with a sticker.

 

 

Chassis processing

 

 

The previous one made a uselessly large hole, so I decided to use another one. The strength is maintained by the minimum necessary processing. Cut the CPU fan part and the port on the back so that they do not collide. It was pretty beautiful. I paint it in black if I like. If the paint is peeled off, it's not cool, so I'm baking it at 60 degrees Celsius.

 

 

Logic board processing

 

 

Since there are few USBs with two, I made a total of four. I used a hub PCB, but I couldn't use the small chip called Fe1.1s that I originally planned because there are few hubs that can be recognized by OS8.5. Instead, I take out the PCB of the hub I bought for 110 JPY and use it.

Since the size of the logic board is one size smaller than the SE/30, the bakelite board is cut and attached by adding it to the iMac board. A soft power button is attached just at the position of the reset switch. Of course, you can also use the soft switch on the keyboard. Both USB and ADB are OK.

 

 

It seems that each wiring was not analyzed much except for the power supply, and the sound, video output, and soft switch were installed through the sub PCB of the iMac. This time, we analyzed it perfectly, removed the sub board, and wired it so that each output was not wasted.

 

 

 

 

 

 

PPC750CX 600MHz CPU Overclocking

 

 

 

It was originally installed by Sonnet's HARMONi G3. Originally it was 600MHz, but it is overclocked to 666Mhz. So I named it Satanic SE/30. It has an additional Firewire PCB. Two 40mm fans are installed. This CPU was special and the firmware had to be read from the ROM of the original logic board and flashed. So if the board revision doesn't match, it won't work. Actually, this CPU that I bought second hand is replaced with a new one by Sonnet. I was very impressed with Sonnet's response at that time. No special driver is required for this card. Two 256MB of memory are installed on the CPU card.

-The PLL settings are as shown in the figure below:

*Originally, this card lowered the 66MHz base clock to 60Mhz and output 10 times to the CPU. Raise this to the original 66MHz.

 

DVD-R drive installation and processing

 

 

 

 

The DVD drive isn't mainstream right now, but it's inconvenient without it, so I installed it on the back. This requires adjusting the angle and position, which is quite a pain. I made a bracket with a 3D printer. The bezel was also made with a 3D printer, but is designed to be attached with tabs rather than glue. It worked pretty well.

 

 

 

 

 

CF card and USB

 

 

Originally, a CF card and two USBs are attached to the slot of the floppy drive. This entire panel is unprocessed and reproduces the appearance of SE/30 as it is. The access LED is on the CF card adapter, so the LED on the case is simply powered on. At first I thought about controlling with Beleth ’s Drum, but since the LED of the CF adapter is controlled by GND, it will not be possible to control the microcontroller as it is. So far I haven't chased it so much and it's in this state.

 

 

 

Shell case

 

For the case, I used the other SE/30 case that was in stock. The front is particular about unprocessed. 17 years ago, I cut it boldly and installed a DVD, so I did something regrettable. Also, at that time, there was no RetrObrite, so I painted it white, but that was not good either.

I cut the back of the case and remade the panel with a 3D printer. I don't think it feels strange at all.

System

 

 

The OS is the same as iMac. Since it is a Rev.B logic board, OS8.5 to OS9.2.2 and OSX 10.1 to 10.4 can be installed. As for OSX, graphics acceleration is not possible, so it feels quite slow. I thought I made a lot of trial and error to use OSX comfortably, but 17 years ago I rarely booted to OSX. Also, if you don't use a lot of graphics, you can use OSX reasonably well. Mac with Radeon 7000 PCI, which works with graphic accelerator on PM8600, works more comfortably on Mac, so I'm a little confused.

 

 

However, OS8.5 (8.6) is a good OS to enjoy a moderate vintage feeling as it also works for classic games. SE/30 can boot up to OS 8.1, so you can enjoy it in a close environment.
