「金髪のジェニー（Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair)」
フォスターは、この曲のモデルである幼馴染のジェーン(Jane)と1850年に結婚し、その翌年には長女マリアンも誕生しています。
この曲が作曲されたのが1854年ですから、結婚当初からフォスター夫妻の間には何かしっくりいかないものがあったのかもしれません。後に、フォスターは妻や娘と離別し晩年は酒におぼれすさんだ生活を送ることになります。
まあ、そうした事情は抜きにして虚心にこの曲を聴いてみると、若くして死別した恋人あるいは妻への切々たる想いが聴く者の胸にせまってくる名曲だと言えるでしょう。
不思議なことに、この曲は発表当時は殆ど注目されなかったようです。多くのアメリカ人に受け入れられるようになったのは、なんと1940年代になってからでした。
ところで、邦題の「金髪の・・・」ですが、原題はwith the light brown hairですから「明るい茶色の髪の・・・」が正しいわけですが、だからといって「茶髪のジェニー」では、渋谷か原宿で群れてるギャルを連想させてまずいですね（笑）
まあ、「亜麻色の髪のジェニー」ぐらいがいいかなと思ってます。
