Trauma is memory information held by neural connections. Because it is a memory, it weakens over time, depending on the strength of the memory. It never completely disappears, but it does weaken to the point where it can be considered practically gone.

The rate at which the memory weakens is extremely slow, and it seems to take years. To speed up the rate at which the memory weakens, it is a good idea to do something enjoyable.

Alternatively, through reconditioning, if you do something more enjoyable than the traumatic reaction symptoms when the trauma is triggering, you can change your mind to respond with enjoyment even when you encounter the source of the trauma in the future.
