■キャンプ・チッカマウガとは■
かつて、大分県別府市大字野口原周辺に存在した米陸軍キャンプ地の名称です。
昭和32(1957)年 3月25日、同キャンプ地はGHQによる接収が解除され別府市に返還されました。
■キャンプ・チッカマウガの名称の由来■
キャンプ・チッカマウガの名称の由来は、
当時、最初に別府に駐留した「米陸軍-第19連隊の愛称が「ザ・ロック・オブ・チッカマウガ」。
また、その連隊の祖であり、アメリカ南北戦争で活躍したジョージ・ヘンリー・トーマス米陸軍将軍のあだ名が「ロック・オブ・チッカマウガ」であったことから名付けられました。
■キャンプ・チッカマウガの概要■
終戦後、GHQは、日本国内全域にキャンプ地配置を計画しました。
大分県では、別府市にキャンプ・チッカマウガ、及び訓練場を設置。
訓練場を含む全体面積は、4,000エーカー（16,187,425平米）
東京ディズニーランド約31.74個分もの巨大な規模です。
・USFJ施設管理コード：FAC 5055（別府市に返還後コード削除）
・HQの位置：33°16'56.16"N／131°29'21.14"E
・キャンプ地面積：436,638平米(東京ドーム9.3個分)
・東西：1,928m
・南北：1,194m
・建設費用は、当時の金額で、兵舎工事費５億円、
将校・下士官宿舎建設費１億５千万円。
将校家族用住宅 47棟、独身将校宿舎 9棟、大型兵舎20棟が建設されました。
実際には、司令部棟や技術部などの各種付帯建築物を含め、
一部を除き189棟をわずか６ヶ月で建築しました。
この工期・工数は、安全管理が厳しくなった現代では大手ゼネコンでも完遂は困難なものだったと思われます。
■キャンプ・チッカマウガに駐留した部隊の変遷■
・歩兵第19連隊 、部隊愛称は "The Rock Of Chickamauga"
※キャンプ開設時に駐留
昭和21年(1946年)12月15日～昭和26年(1951年)6月
・第187空挺隊 、部隊愛称は "Rakkasans"
※朝鮮戦争開戦後に駐留
昭和26年(1951年)6月～昭和30年(1955年)7月5日
仁川上陸作戦では、本部隊から多大な死傷者（約3000名）が出ました。
・第508空挺隊 、部隊愛称は "Red Devils"
※朝鮮戦争休戦後、187空挺隊から交代して駐留
昭和30年(1955年)7月13日～昭和31(1956年)年7月12日
・陸上自衛隊第３特科群
昭和32年(1957年)12月16日、キャンプ・チッカマウガ跡地は、陸上自衛隊別府駐屯地として受け継がれました。

*What is Camp Chickamauga?
Ooaza Noguchibaru area, Beppu City, Ooita Prefecture, Japan.
There used to be a U.S.Army camp site here.
Its name is "Camp Chikamauga".
*Origin of the name Camp Chikamauga
The origin of the name Camp Chikamauga is the nickname of the "U.S.Army - 19th Infantry Regiment", which was first stationed in Beppu at that time,and was named after its founder, U.S. Army General George Henry Thomas, who served in the American Civil War,
And whose nickname was "Rock of Chickamauga".
*Overview of Camp Chickamauga
After the war ended, GHQ planned to establish camp sites throughout Japan.
In Ooita Prefecture, Camp Chikamauga and training grounds were established in Beppu City.
The camp is huge, covering approximately 4,000 acres, including the training area.

*Camp area : 107.9 acres.
*East-west : 6,325.46 ft.
*North-south : 3,917.32 ft.
The construction cost of the Troop Housing was approximately $1,390,000 at the time.
The construction cost of Dependent Housing and enlisted men's quarters was approximately $417,000.
47 of Dependent Housing units, 9 Bachelor Officers' Quarters, and 20 large Troop Housing were constructed.
In fact, the project included various ancillary buildings, such as the command building and the engineering department,
With a few exceptions, 189 buildings were constructed in just six months.
This construction period and number of man-hours would have been difficult to complete even for a major general contractor in today's world of stricter safety controls.

The unit's nickname is "The Rock of Chickamauga".

Stationed from December 15, 1946 to June 1951.
187th Airborne Infantry Regiment.
The unit's nickname is "Rakkasans”.
Stationed after the outbreak of the Korean War.
Stationed from June 1951 to July 5, 1955.
During the Ing Chong landings, the unit suffered heavy casualties of about 3,000 men.
508th Airborne Infantry Regiment.
The unit's nickname is "Red Devils”.
After the armistice of the Korean War, the 187th Airborne was replaced by the 508th Airborne.
The period of stationing was from July 13, 1955 to July 12, 1956.
