The Dog and the Meat
One sunny day, a hungry dog walked along the road. His stomach made a loud sound. He had not eaten all day.
Suddenly, he saw a butcher’s shop. In front of the shop was a large bone with a bit of meat on it. No one was watching.
The dog quickly grabbed the meat and ran far away.
He wanted to eat it in a quiet place. On his way home, he came to a small wooden bridge.
As he walked across the bridge, he looked down into the river below.
To his surprise, he saw another dog in the water. That dog also had a piece of meat in its mouth!
“This meat looks bigger than mine,” the dog thought. “I want that one too!”
He barked loudly and jumped at the other dog.
But when he opened his mouth, the meat in his mouth fell into the river with a splash!
He looked again—there was no dog in the water. Only the river, moving quietly.
Now the dog had no meat at all. He walked away slowly, cold and hungry again.

Don’t be greedy. If you try to take more than you need, you may lose what you already have.

犬と肉
ある晴れた日、お腹を空かせた犬が道を歩いていました。お腹がゴロゴロと音を立てていました。一日中何も食べていなかったのです。
突然、肉屋を見つけました。店の前には大きな骨と少しの肉がありました。誰も見ていません。
犬は素早く肉を掴み、遠くへ逃げていきました。
静かな場所で食べたいと思いました。家に帰る途中、小さな木の橋に来ました。
橋を渡りながら、下の川を見下ろしました。
驚いたことに、水の中にもう一匹の犬がいました。その犬も肉を口にくわえていました！
「この肉、僕のより大きいな」と犬は思いました。「あれも欲しい！」
犬は大きな声で吠え、もう一匹の犬に飛びかかりました。
しかし、口を開けると、口の中の肉は水しぶきとともに川に落ちてしまいました！
もう一度見てみると、水の中に犬の姿はありませんでした。ただ静かに流れる川があるだけでした。
犬はもう肉を何も食べなくなってしまいました。また寒さと空腹に襲われ、ゆっくりと立ち去りました。
