According to the Japanese SHINTO religion, ancestor and nature spirits are always near.

The early Japanese people believed in mountain, river, and tree spirits called KAMI.

Shinto became tied to the sacredness of Japan and its emperor.

Another religion that became popular in Japan is BUDDHISM.

Buddhist monks had come from Korea to Japan around 500 CE.

One type of Buddhism, ZEN、became popular with Japanese aristocrats.

Zen Buddhism’s beliefs about self-discipline were even integrated into

the bushido of the samurai.

As Harari pointed out;

Japan upheld the native religion of Shinto as the cornerstone of Japanese identity.
