英語の諺 「cat」編 はじめに

英語の諺には動物や昆虫などを含む諺が少なくありません。中でも、「dog」・「cat」・「bird」・「horse」などを含む諺が特に目立ちます。ここでは、「dog」と並んで最も身近な「cat」を含む諺を紹介します。

１　A baited cat may grow as fierce as a lion.
２　A cat has nine lives.
３　All cats are grey in the dark.
４　Care killed the cat.
５　Curiosity killed the cat.
６　Keep no more cats than will catch mice.
７　Let the cat out of the bag.
８　The cat would eat fish, but would not wet her feet.
９　Wanton kittens make sober cats.
10　When the cat’s away, the mice will play.
11　Who will bell the cat?
