”What the sewing machine invention brought on”
１．ミシンが発明され、一般の家庭で使われるようになるまでは、女性は針仕事に
多くの時間を費やしたものだ。
Women spent a lot of time on needlework until the sewing machine was invented
and used in ordinary households,
２．しかし、妙なことに、ミシンが初めて登場すると、これは女性の生活洋式を
おびやかすものと考えられた。
However, when the sewing machine first appeared, strangely enough, it was thought that this would threaten the lifestyle of women.
３．これは、おそらく、ミシンが生計のために裁縫をする人々の口からパンを奪おうと
思われたからだろう。
This is probably because it was thought that the sewing machine would deprive the women, breadwinners who sewed to make a living of their work.

４．フランスの発明家パルテルミー・テイモニュは、１８３０年に軍服を縫うミシンを
８０台造ったが、失業を恐れた裁縫労働者によって工場を焼かれてしまった。
A French inventor, Partermy Teimonu produced 80 sewing machines capable of sewing
military uniforms in 1830, but the factory was burned by the sewer employees who feared unemployment.

５．アメリカのウオルター・ハントも１８３４年にミシンを造ったが、労働者の反対を
恐れ、特許の申請も、また実用に供することも出来なかった。
Walter Hunt in the United States also produced a sewing machine in 1834, but was afraid of the opposition from the workers neither applied for a patent nor put it into practical use.

６．ところが実際はミシンが使われるようになると、若い女性が必要にxなってきた。
However, when sewing machines came into use, young women became necessary.
７．１８６０年に、アメリカで起こった南北戦争で軍服や靴の需要が増えたが、ミシンが
なかったなら、応じきれなかったであろう。
In 1860, there was a demand for military uniforms and shoes due to the breakout of the civil
war. but if there had been no sewing machines, it would have been impossible to accept
the demand.

８．被服工場でミシンを動かしたのは、若い女性たちで、女性に全く新しい地位を与え、 女性解放運動と選挙権獲得に大いに役立った。
Young women operated the sewing machines in the garment factory, giving them brand-new positions. As a result, the sewing machine played a big role in promoting the women's
liberation movement and women's suffrage.
