Good evening to our Readers!!How are you today? Hope you haven't been too busy in the first couple weeks of December. On Saturday, the Happy Hikers set off earlyin the morning for our Ashiya Rock Garden--->Mt. Rokko Course. The weather was typical December weather. Highs of 12 degrees and lows of 6. A little chilly but we had a long way to go!!!Our first destination was Ashiya Rock Garden. I guess in this area, wild boar are quite common, but we didn't see any today. There are two routes to choose from on this course. The one to the left is a very challenging route where ropes and special gear are necessary. The one on the right is the more common route. Our group chose to go right.Look at the view of this gorgeous landscape!!!Our second check-in point was Amagatoge. We started around 8:30 today, but at this point, it was already around 12:30 noon. And!! It wasn't even lunch time yet...It was a little challenging course from here...... "Come on!! Let's do it Happy Hikers!!!"Finally we reached Ikkenjyaya which was where we were planning to have lunch. Whew.... finally. We were starrrrrrrrrrrving......After lunch we climbed a little bit higher to Rokko Sancho. Wow, what an awesome view!!!Wow, we walked 931m to the peak of Mt. Rokko!! Nice work Happy Hikers!!!What an awesome group shot!!!Fromthere, it was mostly downhill towards Kinenhidai where we enjoyed a nice warm coffee break.... with cake..... and ice cream..... and potatoes..... pudding.... beer.....and octopus......We finished todays course around 4:45pm at Rokko Cable station. What a great day again with our fun bunch of hiking members. It was the last hike of 2016 but I look forward to all of our journeys next year!!!!Thanks for reading!!!!MAYA

    • 5/29 Happy Hikers

Hello to our Readers!!Hope you all had a nice weekend. It was kinda cloudy, rainy and humid eh.On Sunday, the Happy Hikers went on a challenging journey through the Rokko Mountains. We started out with a tough climb through prickly bushes up to our shoulders. The hot and humid weather made it quite a hard start but we soon reached a break spot and fueled up on our Trail mix.Since the forecast was calling for rain later in the afternoon, we only took a short rest and continued on our journey up towards the Gokurakuchayaato Viewpoint on Mt. Rokko.I guess these are a kind of wild hydrangeas?Group shot at the viewpoint!!Amazing greenery!!This really surprised me. Did you know they have special garbage cans especially for hikers? It was so hot. We had to be very careful not to get heat exhaustion. I love Pocari Sweat.Shortly after this happy group shot was taken and we were just 5 minutes from reaching our goal point, we came across a sign saying that because there was dangers of a landslide, we had to take a detour up another mountain.Go HAPPY HIKERS!!!!!!We were all exhausted......Nice, calming, fresh running water though. Finally at 4:30pm, we reached Arima Hotsprings and took a well-deserved break. Our hiking trip on Sunday was one of our Top 3 challenging hikes. So you can imagine how good this beer at Tajimaya tasted when we finally arrived in Motomachi at 6:30pm.And just to show you what our day was like, here is the data from my 万歩計 application on my iphone.Lol!! Good job Happy Hikers. It was a tough hike today but you guys are great!!! I look forward to our next hiking trip!!!Have a good week!!!Maya

(^0^) Let me tell you about our trip!!!From JR Ashiya, we took the bus up to Higashi Otafukusan Tozan guchi and started our hike up to Higashi Otafukuyama Sanchou. It was kind of a tough start since a lot of us were a tiny bit out of shape from Summer vacation. Everyone tried their best to speak onlyEnglish on today's hike.Look at this pretty butterfly on the flower!!Look at the leaves starting to change color!!!After about 45 minutes, we arrived at the peak of Mt. Rokko. Surrounded by "Silver Grass" (すすき) swaying gently in the breeze, it was a perfect place to have lunch. (Nice photo Y.I.!!)Time for a group shot!!!Lots of pretty wild daisies!!After lunch, we met a very interesting older man. He taught us some very interesting information about this cool mantis that we'd found in the bushes. Now, it was time to start our decline. Along the way, we saw a lot of interesting things.Does anybody know what this is?This was our new word-of-the-day. "TREE STUMP"We didn't count the number of TREE RINGS on this stump though. Finally after an hour or so walking down a long rocky trail, we arrived in the Arima Hotspring area. Good job Happy Hikers. We rested our feet in one of the many foot baths in the area and then caught the train back to Sannomiya for our final destination....TAJIMAYAThank you very much for joining us today T.Y., K.H., Y.I., S.M., I.T., N.T.!!!
