In the first act of Pearl S. Buck's novel The Good Earth, "The poor hero is a thief in the event of a disaster, and based on the thief's money, he becomes rich." I'm not the only Japanese who feels uncomfortable with the setting of this novel.
My parents and grandmother told me that I should never do the devious act of stealing people's things.
One of the things that was praised by other countries at the time of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the Great East Japan Earthquake was that there were relatively few acts like a fireplace thief. According to the media reports at that time, they came to steal from a place far away from the disaster area. It seems that no one tried to steal the things of their neighbors, but even so, I don't want to think that they are the same people who steal the things of people who are suffering from the disaster.
パールバックの「大地」と言う小説の第一幕では、「貧乏な主人公が災害時に泥棒をして、泥棒をしたお金を元に、お金持ちへと成りあがって行きます。」このことで、この小説の設定に違和感を持たれた日本人は、私だけではないことでしょう。
人の物を盗むという、心が穢れた行いは、決してしてはいけないと、両親や祖母から言われたものです。
阪神淡路大震災や、東日本大震災の時に、諸外国から称賛された事の1つが、火事場泥棒的な行為が比較的少なかった事です。当時の報道などによると、被災地からかなり離れた所から盗みに来ていたらしいです。隣人の物を盗もうとした人はいなかったみたいですが、それでも、被災して苦しい思いをされている人の物を盗むとは、同じ人とは思いたくありませんね。

子どもの時、家の前の道を掃除した後に、母に褒めて貰おうと掃除の報告を」したのですが、その時母から言われたのが、「では、隣の家の前は、」と聞かれたので、隣の家の前の道も掃除をしてから再度報告をしました。すると、更に「その隣の家の前は、」と、又言はれたので、「では、何所まで掃除したらよいのか。」と聞きました。そうすると、「《向こう3軒両隣》と言って、ご近所のことは、自分の家の様にきちんとしなければならない。それと、《向こう3軒》と言うのは、言葉上の表現であって、本当は、きりがないのだよ。ご近所全てと考えてもいいのだよ。」と教えてくれたものです。
とにかく、平時に、隣人を大切に互いに助け合っていると、災害時にも、互いに助け合えます。人は1人では非力ですが、助け合い力を合わせると、災害を乗り越える大きな力となります。いつまでも、隣人には親切で居たいものですね。
§Ⅲ-2-（3） Group school attendance
集団登校
The appearance of children living in the neighborhood going to and from elementary school as a group with only children seems to be a shock to those who came to Japan from abroad. It seems to be the standard in other countries that parents pick up and drop off children because they are afraid of kidnapping, but in Japan it is standard for children to go to school in groups.
The older child becomes the leader, taking care of the younger child, instructing and protecting it. Younger children will follow the instructions of older children and strive to be recognized as part of a group of children. In this way, from the time I was a child, I will look at myself in the group and form a personality that can cooperate within the group.
I hope that the children who carry the future of humankind will develop a solid personality and patience to cooperate with each other, and survive in the event of a major disaster.
ご近所で暮らす子供たちが、子供たちだけで、集団で小学校に登下校する姿は、外国から日本に来た人にとっては、衝撃みたいです。子供の誘拐などを危惧して、親が送り迎えするのが諸外国のスタンダードらしいのですが、日本では子供たちが集団で登校するのがスタンダードです。
年上の子供がリーダーとなって、年下の子供の面倒を見て、指導をして、守る。年下の子供は、年上の子供の言いつけを守って、子供同士のグループの中で、グループの一員と認められる様に努力をします。この様にして、子供の時から、集団の中の自分を見つめ、集団内で協調できる人格を形成していきます。
我々人類の未来を背負ってもらう子供たちには、しっかりとした人格の形成と、互いに協調し合える忍耐力を養って、大災害に際しても、是非、生き延びて欲しいものです。
