Morning.
昨日の晩御飯にスパイシー胡瓜の漬物が出た。
Yesterday we had some pickled cucumbers fordinner.
娘1人は、死ぬほど漬物が好き。
One of my daughters is absolutely crazy about pickled veggies.
必死に半分以上自分の皿に乗せた。
She greedily started dishing out about half of them onto her plate.
で、私は、 “Hey stop hogging the pickles!” と言った。
I told her to “Stop hogging the pickles.”
おー！これはなかなか良い英語の表現だ！と思ったけん、ブログを書くことにした。
I thought “Yeah this is a great English phrase so I think I’ll blog about it!”
Hog=家畜の豚
A hog is a pig raised for eating purposes.
けど、to hog somethingは、他の人を考えずに、とにかく何かを独り占めする、という意味です。
But the phrase “to hog something” means to basically take as much of something as you want without considering the feelings or needs of other people.
ちょっと例文を見てみよう。
Let’s take a look at some examples.
“Hey, stop hogging the remote!”
リモコンを独り占めせんでくれ！
“Stop hogging the cookies!”
クッキーを勝手に全部食べんで！
“My brother is hogging the TV.”
兄は、自分の見たいテレビを見てばかりけん、私が見たい番組をちっとも見れん。
バスケで、ball hogというスラングがある。
In basketball, there’s a word “ball hog.”
全く、チームワークをしない人を示す。
This refers to someone who is not a team player.
パスをしない、ずっとシュートして、自分の自責しか考えない人はball hogです。
Someone who never passes the ball, is constantly taking shots, and is only concerned with his own stats is called a ball hog.
“He’s a great player but he’s such a ball hog.”
彼のプレイはめっちゃうまいけど、超〜わがままだ。
