Next, a landmark ruling for Japan's LGBTQ community. The country's Supreme Court has ruled a workplace's restriction on which bathroom a transgender employee could use was not legal.
The case involves a worker at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The transgender woman filed a suit in 2015 after she was banned by her government office from using certain women's restrooms.
A district court found those restrictions to be illegal, but the Tokyo High Court later overturned that ruling.
On Tuesday, Japan's top court ruled against the bathroom restriction. It says the workplace caused significant inconvenience for the plaintiff while placing excessive priority on the feelings of other employees.
It's the first time Japan's Supreme Court has ruled on a case regarding LGBTQ employees in the workplace.

U.S. tech giant Meta's microblogging app Threads has topped 100 million registered users. The Twitter rival was released just five days ago.
Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the milestone in a Threads post on Monday.
He said he was surprised at how fast people were signing up and that growth was due to “mostly organic demand.”
Meta released Threads last Wednesday. It was immediately available in over 100 countries, including Japan.
U.S. media reports say the app reached 100 million users faster than any other platform in history, beating out ChatGPT, which hit the mark in two months.
Video-sharing app TikTok took nine months to reach the milestone, while Meta's own Instagram took more than two years.
The operator of Twitter has suggested it will take legal action over Threads, which is similar in function and appearance to its platform.

Taliban authorities in Afghanistan say they banned beauty salons in the country because the services they offer, including plucking eyebrows, are against Islamic law.

The Taliban said earlier this week salons must close and ordered officials in Kabul to cancel their business permits.
A spokesperson for the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice explained the reason for the ban in a video clip released Thursday.
He said enhancing a woman's hair with other people's hair and plucking eyebrows contradicts sharia law.
The Taliban have been curtailing the rights and freedoms of women and girls in the fields of employment and education since they returned to power in 2021.
In most parts of the country, girls may only attend elementary schools.

NATO members Spain and Canada have expressed opposition to the U.S. decision to provide cluster bombs to Ukraine.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said Madrid respects the decision of a sovereign country but disagrees with the move.
And Canada said it does not support the use of cluster munitions.
The Convention on Cluster Munitions banning the weapons has been ratified by 23 of 31 NATO members.
The United States and Turkey are among those that have not signed it. Neither Russia nor Ukraine are signatories.
Cluster munitions disperse smaller bomblets that sometimes fail to explode. That poses a long-term risk to civilians.

Authorities in China have broadened their definition of espionage in a revised law that took effect Saturday. And the changes are raising concern that more foreign nationals could be arbitrarily locked up.
The country's counterespionage legislation first took effect in 2014 to protect state secrets and other information from being stolen. Leaders in Beijing approved the changes in April. Starting Saturday, spying activities include theft of documents, data, reference materials, and items related to national security.
Government officials in Tokyo say China has detained at least 17 Japanese nationals for alleged spying since 2014. Nine were given prison terms. The trials were held behind closed doors, and authorities did not elaborate on how they had breached the law.

At the international airport there, the first group of pilgrims departed for the Hajj since the Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen in 2015.

A vineyard west of Tokyo is using grapes that have yet to ripen to make wine it says has a refreshing acidity.
The small wine producer in Yamanashi Prefecture uses the Delaware variety of the fruit and harvests it this time of year.
About 1,400 kilograms were gathered Tuesday and fed into a machine that removes the stems. The yellow-green juice squeezed from the grapes was then put into tanks for fermentation.
The winery says it's blessed with large grapes this year. It says the wine will likely have a refreshing taste.

“These grapes probably have the best quality in years. An extremely hot summer is expected, so I hope consumers keep the wine well chilled and enjoy it.”
Production will last until around July 10. The maker plans to sell the new wine from the end of the month.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says the number of people forcibly displaced due to conflict or persecution hit a record 108 million as of the end of last year.
The agency released the report on Wednesday.
It said around 6.5 million people fled their homes in Syria, where a civil war has raged for more than a decade. About 5.7 million were forced to flee Ukraine due to Russia's invasion.
The report also said around the same number left Afghanistan, where the Taliban took power in 2021 after U.S. and other multinational forces withdrew.
The agency added the conflict in Sudan between the military and a paramilitary group that erupted in April has forced people to flee as well. It estimates a record-breaking global refugee population of 110 million as of the end of May.
The report said the responsibility for hosting displaced populations should be shared more equally among nations.

Scientists are warning the Arctic may become ice-free during the summer as early as the 2030s.Their research underscores the impact that greenhouse gas emissions are having on the Arctic.
A team of South Korean and other researchers published their findings on Tuesday in the science journal Nature Communications. Their prediction is based on simulations that utilize data from 1979 to 2019.
Arctic sea ice typically shrinks during the summer and the fall. The results of the simulations indicate the ice may completely melt by the month of September as early as the 2030s.
The researchers say if an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate happens, the warming could accelerate. They also warn that would greatly impact human society and the ecosystem.

Dramatic footage has emerged of rescue workers uniting with four missing children in the Amazon jungle after a search of about 40 days.
The indigenous siblings aged from one to 13 were on board a small plane that crashed in a forest in southern Colombia on May 1. They were found alive on Friday at the end of a joint search launched last month by the Colombian military and local indigenous people.
Three adults, including the mother and the pilot, had been confirmed dead in the crash. But the children were believed to be alive, as searchers found discarded pieces of fruit with what appeared to be human bite marks in the area.
Local media say none of the children is in a life-threatening condition, although they're suffering dehydration and insect bites.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro praised the joint operation, saying indigenous people know the jungle very well.
He said the children's survival was great and exemplary.
