Honolulu, Hawaii, is one of the most popular resort destinations in the world. And this weekend, the city opened the first fully automated rail system in the U.S., with technology provided by a Japanese company.
The initial segment of the Skyline began driverless operations on Friday. It connects nine stations from central Honolulu to the city's outskirts over a distance of about 17 kilometers in 20 minutes. The carriages have space inside for bicycles and surfboards.

The rail system is expected to reduce traffic congestion, carbon dioxide, and other greenhouse gas emissions. Japanese company Hitachi manufactured the train carriages for the city of Honolulu.

Authorities in China have broadened their definition of espionage in a revised law that took effect Saturday. And the changes are raising concern that more foreign nationals could be arbitrarily locked up.
The country's counterespionage legislation first took effect in 2014 to protect state secrets and other information from being stolen. Leaders in Beijing approved the changes in April. Starting Saturday, spying activities include theft of documents, data, reference materials, and items related to national security.
Government officials in Tokyo say China has detained at least 17 Japanese nationals for alleged spying since 2014. Nine were given prison terms. The trials were held behind closed doors, and authorities did not elaborate on how they had breached the law.

Earlier, the country restored diplomatic ties with Iran after a seven-year rift. Flights resumed in mid-June for pilgrims from the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. That's the stronghold of the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
At the international airport there, the first group of pilgrims departed for the Hajj since the Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen in 2015.

A vineyard west of Tokyo is using grapes that have yet to ripen to make wine it says has a refreshing acidity.
The small wine producer in Yamanashi Prefecture uses the Delaware variety of the fruit and harvests it this time of year.
About 1,400 kilograms were gathered Tuesday and fed into a machine that removes the stems. The yellow-green juice squeezed from the grapes was then put into tanks for fermentation.
The winery says it's blessed with large grapes this year. It says the wine will likely have a refreshing taste.

“These grapes probably have the best quality in years. An extremely hot summer is expected, so I hope consumers keep the wine well chilled and enjoy it.”
Production will last until around July 10. The maker plans to sell the new wine from the end of the month.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says the number of people forcibly displaced due to conflict or persecution hit a record 108 million as of the end of last year.
The agency released the report on Wednesday.
It said around 6.5 million people fled their homes in Syria, where a civil war has raged for more than a decade. About 5.7 million were forced to flee Ukraine due to Russia's invasion.
The report also said around the same number left Afghanistan, where the Taliban took power in 2021 after U.S. and other multinational forces withdrew.
The agency added the conflict in Sudan between the military and a paramilitary group that erupted in April has forced people to flee as well. It estimates a record-breaking global refugee population of 110 million as of the end of May.
The report said the responsibility for hosting displaced populations should be shared more equally among nations.

Scientists are warning the Arctic may become ice-free during the summer as early as the 2030s.Their research underscores the impact that greenhouse gas emissions are having on the Arctic.
A team of South Korean and other researchers published their findings on Tuesday in the science journal Nature Communications. Their prediction is based on simulations that utilize data from 1979 to 2019.
Arctic sea ice typically shrinks during the summer and the fall. The results of the simulations indicate the ice may completely melt by the month of September as early as the 2030s.
The researchers say if an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate happens, the warming could accelerate. They also warn that would greatly impact human society and the ecosystem.

Dramatic footage has emerged of rescue workers uniting with four missing children in the Amazon jungle after a search of about 40 days.
The indigenous siblings aged from one to 13 were on board a small plane that crashed in a forest in southern Colombia on May 1. They were found alive on Friday at the end of a joint search launched last month by the Colombian military and local indigenous people.
Three adults, including the mother and the pilot, had been confirmed dead in the crash. But the children were believed to be alive, as searchers found discarded pieces of fruit with what appeared to be human bite marks in the area.
Local media say none of the children is in a life-threatening condition, although they're suffering dehydration and insect bites.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro praised the joint operation, saying indigenous people know the jungle very well.
He said the children's survival was great and exemplary.

Tom: But people have smartphones with cameras now.
Asuka: Correct. So what adults need to do is to teach children not to conduct such acts and help them recognize the terrifying aspects of digital tattoos.
Tom: Agreed. Now that my daughter has her own smartphone, I'm going to try to get her to ask herself something before she puts something online: What if this post goes viral? What if people remember my name or face from this video? Hopefully that’ll help her at least give a second thought to the effects it could have. Sometimes, that makes a huge difference.

The Japanese government is planning to accelerate a push to cut down and replace cedar trees. Cedar pollen triggers hay fever, causing suffering for millions of people in Japan.
Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, Forestry Minister Nomura Tetsuro, and other officials approved the strategy on Tuesday.

“Hay fever is a cause of suffering for many citizens and a social problem that has not been addressed effectively.”
The goal is to cut the pollen count in half over 30 years. The strategy calls for a roughly 20-percent reduction in artificially planted cedar forests over a decade. That translates to 70,000 hectares a year, 40 percent higher than the current number.
The cleared forests are to be planted with other species or a strain of cedar that produces less pollen. The government wants more than 90 percent of cedar saplings to be low-pollen types in 10 years.
