The New Normal (1)
Pearson expresses his happiness at seeing the other A&A staff. And Ueda asks whether it’s true that the company may move its headquarters out of New York.
Grace says that spacing requirements may lead to more demand for office space so that people aren’t seated so closely together. Salmans speculates that people may leave big cities and commuting could drop sharply if many employees and companies keep doing remote work.
lead to = cause
The new normal: 新しい日常
Coronavirus pandemic:
Upend: ひっくり返す
This can mean "actually turn something upside down." Ah, here it's being used metaphorically to mean "completely change, completely upset a situation." Having a baby will completely upend your life, for example. Or, losing 3 employees has completely upended our work schedule. We're all trying to make up the difference.
Work from home:
Work in one's home, be in one's home, ah, as you work. Likewise, you could say, "I used to work from a local café. I would drink coffee and use my laptop there." "From the road" means "while travelling, while in transit." I'll call you from the road, for example.
* from the road 旅行先から
WFH work from home
Work from the third place 第三の場所
職場でも自宅でもない場所で仕事をすること
Rumor:
Ueda says, "There are rumors that A&A may be moving its headquarters out of New York."
Public health regulations: 公衆衛生上の規則
Be spaced at least six feet apart: 6 feet = 1.8m
Have at least six feet of space between them. I've also seen this used about time as in "the meetings will be spaced several hours apart." Or, the games will be spaced a week apart. And we use "singe spaced" and "double spaced" to refer to the distance between lines and texts. I remember my school teachers saying "You have to write a two-page report, single spaced!"
Open floor plan: 間仕切りのない仕切り
Grace says, "That could cause more demand for office space so people aren't packed as closely together as they used to be in open floor plans."
Cancel each other out: 打ち消し合う 相殺する
One thing balances with another or negates the effect of another. Let's say, "I have some extra expenses this month. But I also manage to economize on other things. So they cancel each other out." Or, my savings here canceled out the extra spending over there.
* economize - to manage or use with thrift
Be up for renewal: 更新の時期を迎える
"Up for" means that "something is pending or it has the possibility of happening." A&A's lease is coming up for renewal. So they can renew it. The period in which to renew it is coming up but they might choose not to. If I'm up for a promotion, then I have the possibility to get one. I'm in the running. But it's not guaranteed. Or if someone is up for an award, then they might get that award.
Urban renewal 都市再開発
Air circulation: /ˌsɜːrkjəˈleɪʃən/ 換気
Significant:
In this case, "significant" means "considerable, sizable." A similar term would be "substantial." Things like, we had significant growth in our sales last year. Or, he's lost a substantial amount of weight.
* sizable(ˈsaɪzəbəl ) - Sizeable(saɪzəbəl ) means fairly large.
* Considerable - means great in amount or degree.
* substantial - Substantial means large in amount or degree.
Work remotely:
Work from a location that is not one's office or some official place of work. I've been working remotely myself once or twice a week.
Remote village / remote island / remote control
Remote learning / remote working / remote workforce
Migration away from: からの移住
Movement away from, relocation away from. And this can refer to actual, physical movement or people changing their actions as well. Like, a migration away from DVD rentals towards streaming services.
* A streaming service is a service that allows you to play films and TV programmes on your TV, phone, or computer directly from the internet, without needing to download them.
Drop in commuting: 通勤の減少
Less commuting, less traveling to and from work and to and from school. Likewise, they could be a drop in income, profits, absenteeism. Ah, there can be drops in all sorts of things.
