Homeless in America (2)
Grace lists some of the places where homeless people live. And Lyons cites a government study that says over five hundred thousand people are homeless in the United States. McMillan says homelessness is linked to economic growth to some extent and that housing in cities like New York has become too expensive for people with lower incomes.
According to Grace, homelessness first started to be a serious problem in the 1980s.
Abandoned = 廃墟になった /əˈbæn.dənd/
Discarded and not being used anymore. We use this about things of all sizes and types that are left unused somewhere. There was an abandoned car in a parking lot near my house, for example. It sat there for years and years. Ah, there was also an abandoned TV.
- left in a particular place or condition, usually forever
Be unfit for human habitation = 人の住まいとして適さない
/ˌhæb.əˈteɪ.ʃən/
unfit for human habitation
- used to describe a house that is too dirty or dangerous for people to be allowed to live in it
Flophouse = 簡易宿泊所 /ˈflɑːp.haʊs/
I had to look this word up myself. I wasn't exactly sure what it meant. This is a cheap hotel or a boarding house that's in bad shape. "Flop" is a verb. Ah, the images is dropping down heavily, you know, crashing down somewhere. You could say, "I came home and flopped on a couch. I was so tired."
- an extremely cheap hotel for poor people who have no home in a city
* boarding house /ˈbɔːr.dɪŋ ˌhaʊs/
- a private house where you can pay to stay and receive meals
* flop /flɑːp/
- to fall or drop heavily
- If a book, play, film, etc. flops, it is not successful
- a failure
Double up with = 家を共有する
Grace means sharing accommodations with someone. Ah, imagine you stay at a relative's house for New Years. You might say, "We doubled up with my parents in their bedroom."
double up with (someone)
- To come together as a pair with someone else.
Lay one's head down at night = 夜に寝る
Sleep somewhere at night. You could also say, "rest one's head at night." A bedroom is more than a place to lay your head at night or to rest your head at night. It's a place to relax and ease stress.
Massive = はなはだしい /ˈmæs.ɪv/
Lyons says, "massive unemployment caused by the current pandemic may have boosted homelessness by 40 to 45 percent." "Massive" is "huge, extensive, very very big." Things like, this ad campaign is massive. We're running ads on TV, in newspapers and magazines, all over social media. Or, my university has a massive campus. There's even an internal bus system.
- very large in size, amount, or number:
Affect = 影響を与える
This is always worth going over one more time. "Affect" with an "A" is the verb. And "effect" with an "E" is the noun. For example, I drink so much coffee. It doesn't affect my sleep anymore. That's "affect" with an "A." If I say, "Coffee has no effect on me anymore." That's "effect" with an "E."
Working-class = 労働者階級の
To some extent = ある程度は
To some extent, homelessness is linked to economic growth.
Be linked to = 関連している
Be out of reach for = 手の届かない
We can use "out of reach" to mean "we literally can't reach something with our hands." Cleaning products always say, "Keep out of reach of children." Or, I put the delicate glassware on a high shelf out of reach. But, in this case, it means "people can't afford something." Like, the houses in this neighborhood are very nice but they're out of reach for most people.
Keep out of reach of children 子供の手の届かない所に
Supposedly = 一般的に思われている /səˈpoʊ.zɪd.li/
This is what is said or believed. Like, with McMillan here, sometimes there's a strong nuance of "but in reality." Like, I went to that supposedly great restaurant but the service was awful. /ˈɔ·fəl/
- used to show that you do not believe that something you have been told is true:
Affluent society = 豊かな社会
Struggle to = 必死で・・・する
Meet one's basic needs = 基本的なニーズを満たす
Indictment = 制度などの欠陥、誤りを示すもの 悪い点
/ɪnˈdɑɪt·mənt/
Ueda says, "That's quite an indictment of American society, isn't it?"
Now, "indictment" can refer to a legal procedure in a criminal case.
But Ueda means something that proves or demonstrates a bad situation. A statement or circumstances that say, "Look how bad this is. Look how wrong this is." For example, his speech was a searing indictment of the excessive tax burden on the middle class.
- a formal statement of accusation
- a sign that a policy, system, society, etc. is bad or wrong:
In the first place = そもそも
At the beginning, from the start, to begin with. Here, we're talking about the beginning of some process, some string of events. Likewise, you might say, "So, what brought you to Japan in the first place?"
Persist = 持続する /pɚˈsɪst/
- If an unpleasant feeling or situation persists, it continues to exist
- to continue to exist past the usual time, or to continue to do something in a determined way even when facing difficulties or opposition
