Researchers at the University of Arkansas noticed that urban raccoons look a little different from their wild counterparts—and even behave differently. While wild raccoons are typically cautious, city raccoons are getting more comfortable around humans. As a result, they’re starting to show early signs of what’s known as “domestication syndrome,” the same process that once turned wolves into dogs.

To understand these changes, the team analyzed around 20,000 raccoon photos uploaded by citizens on the nature-recording app iNaturalist. Their computer analysis revealed that raccoons living in cities have snouts that are, on average, 3.56% shorter than those living in rural areas. Their faces also appear slightly rounder and more approachable—almost like a friendly character design. These traits are commonly seen in animals that have adapted to long-term coexistence with humans, suggesting that the urban environment itself may be shaping raccoons’ bodies over time.

The biggest reason raccoons gather near people is simple: there’s always food around in the form of trash. Individuals that don’t fear humans too much have an easier time accessing this food, which means they’re more likely to survive and reproduce. If this trend continues, raccoons could follow a path similar to cats—gradually becoming calmer, safer, and more accustomed to human life. Some households already keep raccoons as pets, and if their evolution continues in this direction, they may become an even more familiar presence in our everyday lives.
