４歳でアメリカに渡った頃、
まだ「Yes」と「No」に「Hello」を加えた３語程度しかしゃべれなかった俺は、
いきなり現地の幼稚園に行くことになった。
当時の怖れや不安はやはり体のどこかに刻み込まれており、
思い出そうとするとわずかに緊張が走る。
しかし、いま思えば素晴らしい環境に恵まれていたのだろう。
そのことを感じさせてくれる証拠を、先日手にした。
幼稚園の先生たちが書いてくれた親宛ての手紙が出てきたのだ。
「これは！」と思い、
時間をとって解読＆翻訳してみたので以下に掲載する。
（ミッキーは私のアメリカでのニックネーム。
Fumikiがアメリカ人に発音しにくかったからこうなった）
あの幼稚園の先生たちは一度に何十人も見ていただろうに、
ひとりの子供のことをよく見ているなーと感心せざるを得ない内容だ。
自分の子供を育てていく時代の夜明け前に佇んでいる俺には、
彼らへの圧倒的な敬意が湧き上がるばかり・・・。
ご指摘いただいている特長は
４０歳になったいまの自分と共通する部分が多いように思うが、
とりわけ、
「人の真似をする必要なんてないと考えている」
というくだりが印象的だ。
４～５歳の頃から他者にそう思われるような行動をとっていたことを思うと、
今の生き方は生まれ持った個性に従った
無理のない形で進化してきた結果なのかな、と（笑）
自分の原点を見つめ直し、
見守ってきてくださった方々への感謝を忘れずに、
今日もあと一歩先を目指して頑張ってみたい。

こちらはご子息のミッキーに関して気づいたことをまとめた進捗報告です。参考にしてみてください。
ミッキーは可愛らしい男の子です。運動選手のような強い体に恵まれています。大人やクラスメイトとの言葉によるコミュニケーションはまだ制限されているものの、彼の愛らしさ、心の温かさ、感受性や知性は明確に感じ取ることができます。彼は静かに教室に入ってくるなりすぐに工作テーブルの輪の中に入ったり、興味を惹かれる素材やゲームに夢中になります。また、自分のお弁当の一部を分けてくれたり、家から持ってきたものを大事そうに見せてくれたりしながら、我々みんなに対して親しく振る舞います。彼は大人に世話されることを好む一方で、それに頼るようなことは決してなく、お友達の誘いも快く受け入れます。最近のある日、エイミーがミッキーをくすぐったところ、彼も彼女をくすぐり返したんですよ！
彼は年齢が上の子たちよりも手先が器用で、右利き用のハサミを左手で持っていとも簡単に且つ正確に使いこなします。美しく興味深い絵も描きますし、名前も素早く簡単に書くことができます。彼は普段から文字をたくさんなぞっていますが、幾何学図形、文字、数字など、どんなものでも真似て描いてみせるのです。
ミッキーの基礎筋力はよく発達していて、確実且つ優雅に運動します。彼はアスリートなのです。転げまわったり、側転をしてみせてくれたりもします。屋外の設備を使って一生懸命遊びますし、バットで正確にボールを打つことだってできます。
ミッキーには優れた知性があり、集中力を長く持続させることができます。彼は自分が選んだどんな活動にも集中して取り組みます。クリエイティブな思考を持ち、どんな課題及びどんな道具の使い方に関してであれ、人の真似をする必要なんてないと考えているようです。彼は他の人とは異なる面白い方法で何かを生み出したり道具を使ったりします。彼はすべての大文字といくつかの小文字を覚えています。彼の思考は素早く、スポンジのように物事を学びながら吸収していきます。何かまだ知らないことがあれば、刺激的なチャレンジだと思えるような子です。数字をよく覚え、それらがどのぐらいの量を差すのかを理解しています。
ミッキーとともに過ごすことができて我々も幸せを感じています。

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Yukawa,
The following is a progress report of our observations of Miki, which will supplement your own observations.
Miki is a handsome boy. He has a strong athletic build. Even though he is as yet limited in his verbal communications with peers and adults in school, his sweetness, warmth, sensitivity and intelligence are obvious. He quietly enters the schoolroom, quickly becoming involved at the art table or with a material or game that attracts him. He is friendly to all of us, after sharing part of his lunch and his treasures from home with us. He enjoyes adult attentions, but is not dependent on it. He is receptive to the friendly advances of his peers. One day recently Amy tickled Miki and he tickled her back!
His manual dexterity is superior to others for his chronological age. He uses right handed scissors holding them in his left hand & cutting with ease and accuracy. He draws intricate & beautiful pictures. He writes his first name quickly & easily. He traces many letters. He reproduces an endless variety of geometric figures, letters, and numbers.
Miki's large muscle ability is very well developed. He moves with grace and assurance. He is an athlete. He tumbles and does cartwheels. He uses the outdoor equipment with enthusiasm & capability. He bats the ball with precision.
Miki has superior intelligence. His attention span is lengthy. He becomes very involved in any activity he chooses. He is creative in his thinking. He does not find it necessary to copy what others have done before him, whether it be an art project or the use of equipment. He finds interesting, different ways to produce or use them. He knows all of the upper case letters & some lower case letters also. His mind is quick & he absorbs learning like a sponge. When he doesn't yet know something, it's an exciting challenge to him. He recognizes many numbers & understands how many a numeral represents.
It has been a pleasure to have Miki with us.
