そうだね、まるで彼らの時計が何年も前に止まったみたいに新しい音楽を聴くのをやめて、なつかしのロックショーに行く人達がいるね。
嫌だね、今の音楽のほうが今までよりいいに決まってるんだから。
うん、俺たちのバンドは８０年代はすごくひどかったけど、今はほんとに良くなってるよ。

What do you know now that you didn’t know in 1983?
Actually, we have a way better time now. It’s a funny thing, because people are always saying, “Those were the days,” but these are the days, Bill.
Exactly. I see these people go to these geezers-of-rock shows as if their watch had stopped many years ago and they quit listening to new music. That’s a bummer, because music right now is as good as it ever was.
I know. Our band was pretty bleepin’ horrible in the ’80s, so we’re actually better now. We have friends all over the world, so we just have a better time.
パンクロックに何があったっていうんだ？
最近はcorporate punk とかpop-rock とかそんなようなものがあるけど、どう思う？
文字通りポピュラーになったパンクバンドと称するバンドがたくさんいるけど、パンクロックは今までずっとあったのと同じだ。
つまり明日、オークランドのけんかになったり飲んだりするパーティでいくつかのパンクバンドに会う予定だ。それは全く企業とは関係ないよ。実際ふさわしいひとを知らないと、アドレスさえおしえてもらえない。本当のパンクロックを見つけたかったら、そこだよ。ふさわしい人々をわからなければならない。
So what happened to punk rock? Now we have corporate punk or pop-rock or whatever it is this week. What’s your take?
There’s a lot of so-called punk bands that got real popular, but punk rock is the same as it’s always been. I mean tomorrow, I’m going to Oakland to see some punk bands at a party that will have fighting and kegs. It’s definitely not corporate. In fact, you can’t even get the address unless you know the right people. If you want to find real punk rock, it’s there. You just have to know the right people.
”Ｃｏａｓｔｅｒ”はあなたの多くの作品の中でどこに位置しますか？
結構いいレコードだと思うよ。6番目にいいね。支持するよ。個人的には気に入ってるけど、6番目だと思う。“So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes” ほどは良くないと思うけど、“Pump Up the Valium”よりはいいね。オールドスクールサウンドだから好きだよ。
Where does “Coaster” fit in with your vast body of work?
I think it’s a pretty good record. I think it’s our sixth best and I’ll back that up. I think it’s No. 6, although it’s one of my personal favorites. I don’t think it’s as good as “So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes,” but I think it’s better than “Pump Up the Valium.” I like it because it’s got the old-school sound.
Tegan and Sara の曲はすごくおもしろいね。
彼女たちはいい子達だよ。ほんとに。あるマガジンがＮＯＦＸがこの曲で Tegan & Sara を侮辱してるって書いた。”いったい何を言ってやがるんだ？”と思ったよ。どちらかといえば、自分を侮辱してる。
Your Tegan and Sara song is hilarious.
They were nice girls, for sure. One magazine wrote that NOFX dissed Tegan & Sara in the song and I thought, “What the hell are you talking about?” I’m dissing me, if anything.
ツアー中はどうやってのりきっってるの？
最も重要なことは2週間半以上は一度に旅にでないってことだ。
酔っ払って演奏するのが、すき、いやそうしなくちゃいけないからね。
2週間以上続けて超酔っ払うっていうのは出来ないからね。
だいなしだから。
How do you guys survive on the road?
The most important thing we do is that we don’t tour for more than two and a half weeks at a time because I like to — no, I have to — play drunk. I can’t really get super drunk for more than two weeks in a row because, you know, I’m ruined.
変なライブの話は？
エクアドルだね。この国のクラブに出たんだ。金持ちのキッズがショーの主催で、そこには
700人くらいいた。楽しかったよ。やつらは全員リッチなキッズだから、”いちばん大きな家のヤツは誰だ？そこに行ってパーティやろう”って言ったんだ。それで、ライブの後にそのキッズの家にみんなで行った。彼の家はラグーンのある巨大な家だった。彼の母親はそこにいたけど、彼女の前で山盛りドラッグやってた。楽しかった。
Any extra-weird gigs?
I’ll say Ecuador. We showed up at this country club. Some rich kids put on the show and there were about 700 people there and it was fun. Since they were all rich kids we said, “So who’s got the biggest house? Let’s go over and party at your house.” So we all went to this kid’s house after the show. He had this huge house with a lagoon. His mom was there and everyone was doing tons of drugs in front of her. It was a good time.
"Punk in Drublic"が変えたことは？
俺たちのレコードはそれが出た時は、特別いいっていうのはないんだ。“Punk in Drublic”は何年かにも渡って売れた。結局ゴールドってことになったけど、ゴールドになるまでに8年かかってる。すぐに何かが起こるってことはなかったよ。90年代、だんだんポピュラーになっていった。それからその人気を失ってない。貨物列車みたいな、すごくゆっくりの貨物列車で旅してるって感じだ。
How did “Punk in Drublic’’ change things for you guys?
None of our records did particularly well when they came out, but “Punk in Drublic” was the one that sold the most over the years.
That record ended up going gold, but it took eight years to go gold. Nothing happens fast for us. In the ’90s, we got more and more popular and, since then, we haven’t lost any of that popularity. We’re just kind of cruising along like a freight train a very slow freight train.
Warped Tourについてはどう思う？
3年間出てないよ。でなかった理由はBad Religionも出てなかっただろ？仲間と一日中あそんでいられるから、Warped Tourがすきなんだ。Minor Threat ,Bad Religion ,Bouncing Souls , Flogging Mollyとつるんであそぶんだ。いい時間だよ。演奏だけじゃなくて、ビニールプールで遊んだり、ポーカーしたり、バーベキューしたり、酔っ払ったり。それとロックンロールが時間通り始まる数少ない時だ。そう、それとみんな30分しか演奏しない。天才だね。誰が1つのバンドを30分以上見たい？誰も見たくないね。オランダのフェスにブルース・スプリングスティーンといっしょに出演したんだけど、この迷惑なヤツは2時間半も演奏したんだ。20分くらいしかいい曲がないのに。
だいたいみんなするよね。
そうだね。だから2時間半も演奏しないといけなかったのか？プロモーターはそんなこと頼んでないよ。
彼がやっただけだ。
What’s your take on the Warped Tour?
We haven’t done it in three years. The reason we haven’t done it is because Bad Religion hasn’t been on it, you know? I like it because I get to hang out with my buddies all day. I get to hang out with the Minor Threat guys and the Bad Religion dudes, Bouncing Souls and Flogging Molly. That’s a good time. It’s not really about playing, but hanging in our blow-up pool and playing poker and having barbecues and getting wasted.
Plus, it’s one of the few times when rock ’n’ roll starts on time.
Right And everyone only plays a half hour, which is genius. Who wants to watch a band for more than half an hour? Nobody. I just played with Bruce Springsteen at a festival out in Holland and the bleepin’ dude played for two and a half hours. Now, he only has 20 minutes of good songs anyway.
Everybody does, pretty much.
Right. So he has to play for two-and-a-half bleepin’ hours? The promoter didn’t ask him to do that, he just did.
