これは通常Authentication Chipと呼ばれるもの。機器（この場合shuffle）に外部機器が接続された場合（shuffleの場合はヘッドホン）が内部のchipと会話をして正規品かどうかを判別する電子キー２個セットで作動する分の１個。

Reshot the photo myself just to make sure. Chip says 89S3E3, which is different from the BoinBoin article photo.

These are called Authentication Chips, a piece of 2 sets that operate together to confirm that the mating hardware is compatible, in this case it is being used to "hinder" other headphones with 2 buttons "not" to work with the shuffle.
