どこか変だよ日本人

日本とアメリカの教育制度は、全然異なります。

アメリカの高校、大学ではテーマが定められた、討議のクラスが大きな比重を占めて、実施されています。そこでは生徒たちは、質問を自由に言い、意見を述べ、先生に反論することすらあります。

高校生は学業だけでなく様々な行事・スポーツ活動に参加し、場合によってはパートタイムの仕事を

持っている場合もあります。
大学生たちはアカデミックな教育課程の学習のみでなく、社会活動への参加、学校単位での大学として

受け入れられる様々な活動への参加、をおこないます。
日本では中等教育・高等教育は規制がとても厳しいと言えます。生徒たちは正規の学校時間以外に、

数時間を大学入試に備え、補習をさせられたり、塾・予備校通いに費やします。良い大学に入ることが

良い仕事・生活を得るための鍵なのです。このように、高校での生活は厳しいものがあり、その結果として

彼らは有名な良い大学に進学します。ひとたび大学に入ってしまえば、彼らは安心して、大学生活を

エンジョイ出来るのです。多くの学生はアルバイトに旅行にと、時間を使います。

なぜなら、大学を卒業して、社会に入り就職すると仕事の関係で、殆ど自分の自由な時間が

持てないからです。

III. Education System

The educational system is Japan and America is very different. 

 American high schools and universities foster a discussion-oriented class in which

students are free to ask questions, express their opinions, and even refute the teacher. 

High school students are involved in many activities, sports, or even have part-time

jobs.

  Universities emphasize not only academics, but also the participation in community

and school-based activities when considering acceptance into the university. 

 In Japan, junior high and high school is very rigorous.  Students spend several hours

after the regular school day attending extra school and studying in order to prepare

them for the university entrance exam. 

 The acceptance into a good university is key in order to get a good job and to have a

good life.  Thus, students work extremely hard in high school so that they can get into a

well-known university.

  Once they enter the university, students can relax and enjoy their life.  Many students

get part-time jobs and travel because after graduation students have little free time due to

the demands of their job.

別の相違点はコミュニケーションの方法にあります。コミュニケーションは３つの部分から

構成されていると言われています。その割合はアメリカでは、会話で使われる言葉（７％）、

声の調子（３８％）、それからボディランゲージ（５５％）と言うことです。

コミュニケーションの実に９３％もの部分が言葉以外の部分によると言うことは大変興味のあることです。

日本人とアメリカ人とではこの割合が異なってくるようです。

アメリカ人はコミュニケーっションで直接に伝えるニュアンスに重きをおきます。

例えば、アイコンタクトであり、ジェスチャーもまた重要です。友達に会話するとき、家族と会話するとき、

上司であるとき。アイコンタクトは相手の話の自分に興味があるかないかを表現する上での相手に対する

サインになります。

相手のコミュニケーションが直接的で、そして話の方向がはっきりしていると、人は反応しやすいものです。

誰かの話に共感の意を表すときは、アイコンタクトを維持することと同時に硬い握手もまた大切です。

II. Communication Styles

Another aspect of culture is the style of communication.

  Communication is made up of three components:  Words (7%), Voice Tone (38%),

and Body Language (55%).

  It is interesting that 93% of communication is based on the things people do not say. 

Japanese and American culture express these aspects in different ways.  Although

Americans value directness in communication, eye contact and gestures are also

important.

  When a person is talking to a friend, family member, or boss, eye contact is used as a

sign of respect and that the person is interested and listening to what the other person is

saying.

  People respond when communication is direct and the main point or direction is

very obvious.  When greeting someone, a firm handshake is necessary as well as

maintaining eye contact.  In contrast, Japan uses a more indirect way of communicating. 

In meetings, people tend to circle around the point and not make any definite

agreements.  When speaking with a person of higher rank, it is not polite to show eye

contact. The greeting style is a bow and the lower the bow means the greater respect

shown to the other person.

―私の目から見た、と言うよりアメリカ人共通の、日本人そして日本の社会と私たち

アメリカ人そしてアメリカ社会との違いを書いてみました―

(Ⅰ)個人対全体　

　日本とアメリカの文化の違いの一番大きな点は、社会が全体か、あるいは個々人か、いずれかを

尊重するか、と言う点にあると思います。
アメリカはかなりの程度で個人主義的な文化といえます。同時に創造性と人々の間の競争原理が重要視

されます。学校では生徒たちは学業で優秀な成績を収めるために努力し、また学業と同時に課外の学生

生活でも認められるように努力します。学生たちは常に他の同級生と｢差別化｣されるように努力します。
さらに、ビジネスマンの場合は会社で自分個人の能力を高めることに注力し、同僚との連帯義務にあまり

こだわりません。むしろ同僚は会社での自分の昇進の妨げになる可能性のあるものと考えています。
一方、日本は全体主義的な文化ですから、そのなかでは全体の目的が個人の目的に常に優先します。

グループの中での協調がひじょうに重要になってきます。会社では、社員は協力して仕事をします。

仮に仕事が終わらないうちに退社するものがいれば、同僚たちは彼を蔑視します。

なぜなら全員でその仕事に協力して取り組むべきと言う信念を持っているからです。

I. Individualist vs. Collectivist Culture

One of the main differences between Japanese and American culture is the degree to which the society focuses on the individual versus collective achievements. 

 America is a highly individualistic culture and values creativity and competition among people.  Students in school strive to be the best in their class and desire to be recognized

for their accomplishments both in school and in extracurricular activities. 

 Students want to be different from the other members in their class.  In addition, businesspersons seek to advance themselves in the company and do not consider the

obligations to their co-workers.  Their colleagues are viewed as a possible hindrance to

moving up in the company.   

 On the other hand, Japan is a collectivist culture in which the needs of the group are placed above the needs of the individual.  Harmony within a group is very important. 

 In a company, people often work together on a task.  The group members look down upon a person who leaves early if the task is not completed, because they believe that all must work together on it.
