英英辞典で nose の項目を見ている時に、nose to tail という表現を見つけました。

nose は「鼻」、tail は「尾」

はたして、どんな意味なのでしょう。

車が nose to tail という状態にあるのは、車が間にスペースがないくらいつながっていること。

数珠つなぎってことです。


COBUILD の説明文にもあるとおり、アメリカでは bumper-to-bumper といいますが、この bumper は日本語にもなっていますね。

LDOCE の説明文には、bumper はイギリス英語で、アメリカでは fender というと書かれています。

でも、数珠つなぎの bumper-to-bumper はアメリカでの言い方なのですね。

fender-bender というと、フェンダーが曲がるくらいの軽い事故のことです。


ちなみに、ギターのフェンダーも fender ですが、これは創業者の Leo Fender 氏の名前からとっています。
